'Harry Potter' Hits $900M Worldwide in Record Time
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 crossed the $900 million worldwide mark on Wednesday, its 15th day in release. That made Harry's last stand the fastest movie ever to reach that milestone, breaking Avatar's 18-day record.
On Wednesday, Deathly Hallows Part 2 brought in $24.7 million worldwide ($5.2 million from domestic and $19.5 million from foreign), lifting its total to $906.8 million. It climbed to 19th place on the all-time chart, jumping past Goblet of Fire's $896.9 million final haul.
The first Harry Potter, Sorcerer's Stone, still ranks as the top-grossing with $974.8 million, while only Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Transformers: Dark of the Moon slot higher for 2011 with $1.03 billion and $926.1 million, respectively. Deathly Hallows Part 2 is on course to join the $1 billion club by early next week.
Domestic alone, Deathly Hallows Part 2's business was down 58 percent from last Wednesday to $5.2 million, falling harder but grossing more than the previous July Potters, Half-Blood Prince and Order of the Phoenix, at the same point. With a $291.7 million tally in 13 days, it also edged out the final gross of Goblet of Fire ($290 million) and will eclipse Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows Part 1 on Thursday (though it will still rank last in estimated attendance).

I still didn't watch it, btw.

It's going to be close. I think Avatar got passed it on its 20th day. Which means Potter has to gross $93.3 million in the next 4 days, an average of $23,325,000 per day. Considering it did $24.7 million yesterday, and with the weekend coming up...
What are you doing on ATRL right now sis? Call some friends and hit the theater!

Avatar did it in 19 days, so Potter has until Sunday to tie and until Saturday to break it.

On the foreign front, Avatar grossed an enormous $136.3 million, down ten percent from last weekend, and its total soared to $673.3 million in just 21 days, which is the fourth biggest haul ever. Throw in domestic's $352.1 million, and the picture's worldwide take crested the billion dollar mark. With $1.025 billion, it's the fourth highest-grossing picture ever worldwide, surpassing The Dark Knight, and, in a matter of days, it will leap frog over The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest to claim second place behind Titanic's $1.84 billion.

Its domestic gross was $352.1m after 17 days, but, like Potter, it opened the Wednesday before in some places, adding the two extra days.

The self-proclaimed king of the world remained the leader of the worldwide box office with another $133.5M in ticket sales from overseas markets this weekend. That sent the international cume soaring to an astounding $670.2M and the global gross to a jaw-dropping $1.022 billion. Avatar easily became the fastest film in history to shatter the $1 billion mark doing it in a mere 19 days.

Could it become the #2 highest grossing movie ever? Or maybe at least #3?

Makes perfect sense, thank you. I don't think it's capable of hitting that billion in just 3 days, no definitely not.

It won't touch Avatar or Titanic, but #3 seems more than possible.
