Another new radio No. 1: Mims
Still recovering from the long Hall of Fame night, but here's the radio airplay news. The fourth No. 1 in as many weeks takes over the national radio airplay audience chart, according to figures from Nielsen BDS, Arbitron and Radio & Records. That would be Mims' torrid This Is Why I'm Hot, which rises nearly 5% in total audience just as last week's ephemeral No. 1, Lloyd's You, falls 6% and drops to No. 2.
The remainder of the top 10 were all esconced there last week; they are hits by Nelly Furtado, Robin Thicke, Akon, Ludacris, Beyonce, Omarion, Justin Timberlake and Daughtry. More detail follows.
> The annotated top 10:
1-3 last week Mims/This Is Why I'm Hot (+4.9% gain in total audience): That didn't take long -- just nine weeks from chart entrant to chart-topping status. Mims will break the streak of one-week No. 1's; he's in solid for I'd say at least three weeks.
2-1 Lloyd/You (-6.4%): Seemed very close to tipping last week, and duly did so.
3-4 Nelly Furtado/Say It Right (-3.9%): Lucky bounce of the week, as it continues to erode slightly and will surely be passed by Robin Thicke and most likely Akon next week.
4-6 Robin Thicke/Lost Without U (+8.6%): Your next No. 1? It's between this and Akon at this point, although I'd give Akon the momentum edge.
5-8 Akon/Don't Matter (+11.1%): Good shot at jumping to No. 2 next week if this pace continues.
6-2 Ludacris/Runaway Love (-18.3%): Running away in a downward direction.
7-5 Beyonce/Irreplaceable (-12.7%): Not quite ready for replacement in the top 10.
8-7 Omarion/Ice Box (-1.3%): Stays frozen in the top 10, melting just slightly.
9-9 Justin TImberlake/What Goes Around ... (+3.9%): Bit of an audience comeback; if it continues it could get as far as No. 6 next week.
10-10 Daughtry/It's Not Over (+2.6%): Signs of slowing.
> Next week's top 10 contenders:
There's a sizable gap between the total audience figure for No. 10 (slightly above 80 million audience impressions) and No. 11, Gwen Stefani's The Sweet Escape (67 million). With just a 3.8% audience boost, Gwen will need an airplay boost and some luck to take that final step into the top 10. Also possible: Diddy's Last Night (up from 15 to 13 on the chart with a 5.7% audience gain) and Fergie's Glamorous (23-16, +10.4%).
> This week's hottest songs:
Kind of a tepid week all around -- no top 10 debuts and only two songs hitting the 20% audience gain threshold. Those were Ciara's Like a Boy, which is up 33.7% in its second week, good for a 94-65 chart move; and Gym Class Heroes' Cupid's Chokehold, establishing that chokehold on the airwaves with a 20.4% audience gain and a 39-29 chart move.
> This week's debuts:
Just four songs made their bows on the top 100, although two had high debuts. Those were Beyonce's duet with Shakira, Beautiful Liar/Bello Embustero, at 71, and T-Pain's Buy U a Drank at 72. Also entering the chart: Pink's U & Ur Hand (good week for spelling unorthodoxy) at 87 and Gerald Levert's In My Songs at 93.
