The Japan Hot 100 Singles is based on U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It components CD package sales data from Soundscan Japan and radio audience levels data from Plantech.[1] Although Japan has the highest amount of downloads sold in the world, digital download sales data is not added to the chart.[1][2]
The first number-one song on this chart was "Step and Go" by Arashi on the issue dated March 3, 2008.[3] On the May 5, 2008 chart, a non-Japanese song ("Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis) won number-one for the first time.[4]
On the March 8, 2010 chart, "Hitomi no Screen" by Hey! Say! JUMP became the chart's 100th number-one.
