okay lemme share another track from my Rihanna album. it's not really a strong lyrical track, but i love the meaning behind it. its also written as a commercial pop song, so keep that in mind.
The song on the surface appears to be a twisted love song, with Rihanna telling her lover and family to stay away from her because she will hurt them. Whether it’s out of spite or just innocent guilt, is unknown, but Rihanna begs them to put her out of their lives. But the song’s true meaning is a lot deeper than what it seems at face value. The reason Rihanna asks them to distance themselves from her is because she fears that her fame will do them more harm than good. In relation to a boyfriend or love interest, she realizes that she can’t have a normal relationship because the media will constantly try to rip them apart with rumors and speculation. She sings ‘any love I’m in/ends up in flames’, alluding to the fact that all her past relationships have ended on bad terms. As for her family, she regrets how her decision to pursue the limelight has forced them into it with her against their will. In a statement about the song’s meaning, Rihanna said, “I have a younger brother who is very quiet and prefers to keep to himself but thanks to my fame, the media are always invading his privacy asking about me and whatnot. I dig the concept and the lyrics are pretty great man!
I was getting mad at myself because I had bad writer's block for a few months. Whatever I was coming up with wasn't up to par with any of my previous work, so I decided to take a step back and take a little bit of a different approach. I focused a little less on lyrics and more on melody for this one and just tried to make a fun cute love song instead of some profound introspective thing as I usually try to do. Gonna try to hammer out the PH9 judging panel this week so that we can get to planning. All the judge apps are in (I think, I don't think anyone else wants to apply), and I can honestly say there isn't a single flop application. They're all pretty diverse and would bring something new to the panel. We'll have to see what happens!
