If it wasn't for Dark Horse, I genuinely think Unconditionally could have been huge. Everything about it screams 'hit', and it's my all time favourite Katy song. The production, the video, her vocals, the lyrics, everything is sheer perfection. I was rooting for that song so much more than DWUW.

see: the clunky rhythm of the chorus. It doesn't even have a hook.
It did pretty well tbh for non-radio fodder, but only b/c she promo'd it to hell and back.

What kind of a 1-2-3-4-5-6- punch is Prism? Like Track 1 through to Dark Horse are perfection. I can't believe I've gone from hating Katy to buying all her albums .

This tho. Prism's uptempos are all flawfree... Some of the most unique and strong single material of any pop girl in the last two or three years tbh. Too bad she paid dust to LL and WoA, like wtf?

All smashable and insanely memorable and def not generic.

In SYG i was talking about like full fledged pop albums, which i believe are albums of well crafted music that deviates from current music trends while also advancing that artist's sound, and i realized katy doesn't rlly have any.

One of the Boys had like 4-5 actual good songs, some bad guilty pleasures, and the rest was either awful or boring. Nowhere near a great pop album, but her personality shined through a lot in the music. Kinda miss that about Katy.

Teenage Dream had really well produced pop music, and it was definitely a change in sound for Katy, but it rlly fit the sound of the time so I wouldn't rlly categorize it as a fully fledged pop album. Still an iconic pop album even if it lacks the acclaim. Definitely the closest she's gotten to a full fledged pop album.

Prism could've been great had she stuck with that post divorce acoustic theme/sound she was going for. Theme the album around self-reflection, perserverance, and new love, add more acoustic/folk instrumentation eg. remove Juicy J from "Dark Horse" and add a piano to the song, add more strings to "Legendary Lovers", make "Roar" sound harder and more like stadium rock, remove all the songs recorded in Sweden even tho they bop, etc. Would've came for that 67-71 metasore tbh.

also, am i the only one who noticed they changed the title of the "Birthday" lyric video from "Birthday (Lyric Video)" to just "Birthday"? are they lowkey trying to pass off the lyric video as the official since it has more views?

I'll admit that it's her most diverse album musically, but like, it's not that weird kind of sonic diversity where everything still feels cohesive (like Love. Angel. Music. Baby. or Unorthodox Jukebox) imo. She should've stuck to the acoustic sound w/ the more mature written songs. Like, in no particular order, she could've included the following songs and had a full album:

Roar (more stadium rock sound)
Unconditionally
Legendary Lovers (more strings
Spiritual
Choose Your Battles
It Takes Two (feat. Sam Smith or Bruno Mars)
Dark Horse (more piano driven)
By the Grace of God (piano only, NOT overproduced)
Ghost (w/ a re-write cause some of the lyrics are so cringe and less electronic production)
