I'm not one to deny Madges Impact lol, but you are really overestimating the situation. There were solo female artist before her. Hell I would argue that most pop girls are closer to Janet clones than Madonna ones.
Hmm I'd say the current crop of pop girls today (Charli, Iggy, Miley, Ariana etc) are influenced more by Madonna than Janet (Current R&B girls like Tinashe fit more with Janet). However I think it's wrong to say Britney descended from Madonna: Her career seemed a lot more Janet-esque but she was kind of automatically put under the 'Madonna' tag because she and Madonna became friendly etc.

Of course there were solo female acts before her but she made it the PARADIGM for a music mega-star and was the first female to reach the delirious, international hyper-star status previously reserved for the rock bands and male artists of the 60s and 70s
