The Holy Grail was an artifact of God, it was the first element of magic and sought after forever, only Merlin was pure of heart enough to be granted its magical powers.
The problem was that Nimue took magic from the Holy Grail before Merlin turned it into Excalibur, thus endowing herself with the same powers, problem was she used her magic for evil instead of good, staining her heart with darkness.
Vortigen was a warlord searching for the Holy Grail, he arrived in the village of Oxleigh, known for its middlemist flowers, and ransacks it, killing all of its inhabitants except Nimue, and burning it to the ground. He wasn't a Dark One, she took his mask in order to bask in her own darkness and embrace it, as a reminded of the power it provided her.
