But then the chorus comes along and the middle 8 I'm so conflicted.

Katy's single is also amazing and euphoric and even a little uplifting. It feels a bit like Britney's "Stronger", it's a little hard not to feel a bit empowered when Max Martin does the giant ABBA-sized chord change in the chorus and she blares "I'VE GOT THE EYE OF THE TIIIGEERRR" in your ears.
