Listen to "Blue"
The lowdown: See, pop stars? Not all songs dedicated to your children need to be terrible. (This message especially goes out to whoever ends up with John Mayer next.) On this gentle ballad, Beyoncé floats along on a muted piano and a retro island sway, capturing the happy peace that motherhood brings her. The orchestral swell as she fights the relentless march of time to hold on to that feeling forever only makes her sentiment all the more moving. It’s a lovely, loving tribute to Blue Ivy, whose record-breaking feature credits are setting her up well for a successful music career of her own some day.
ATRL says...: "When I first saw this on the track listing I expected it to be some schmaltzy boring ballad, but it actually wasn't,"
Penk wrote. "The gorgeous production and whole vibe of it really surprised me!"
bluth was touched by the song: "I’m sure when she’s old enough to understand Blue will listen to this album knowing she’s featured on it and never look at her mother the same way ever again."
adrianbeane thought there was "something so Beyoncé about featuring her own child on her song," but
lovesong felt "the bits with Blue are so cute."
August was not convinced, joking, "If this is any indication of what Blue's solo work will sound like, I'm going to go ahead and say she'll be the first Knowles I won't stan for."
Best bit: "Some days we say words that don't mean a thing/But when you holding me tight, I feel alive"
