Building on the back of previous hits like 2006’s “What Goes Around,” the performer who has literally been singing since Mouseketeer days found his true artist voice. It’s a smoky Memphis soul dashed with a hint of gospel that can be heard in current radio staples “Mirrors” and “Not A Bad Thing” and coaxed to its highest potential courtesy of a crackerjack, horn-laden backing band. With a catalogue now comparable to his talents—not to mention an amazing, fully automated stage set and an unparalleled laser show—Timberlake is finally able to loose a mature, fully realized assault upon the masses.

Perhaps it was the spot-on take on Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature” that convinced me that maybe the torch had been passed. No one ever disputed MJ’s claim to be the King of Pop, and here was JT, hitting the same notes and silky smooth dance moves with the greatest of ease. If he walks like the King and talks like the King...

Think what you want about the guy, when it comes to pop performances and looking at his contemporaries, such bravado certainly seems Just-ified.

Someday, if he ever gets past his post-adolescent brattiness phase, Justin Bieber may grow up to be Justin Timberlake. Beebs should be so lucky.

Timberlake doesn’t rely on pyrotechnics or costume changes to help carry the show. He seldom stops moving, never lip syncs as he runs down his hits — from Cry Me a River off his first solo album to SexyBack and newer smashes Suit & Tie and Mirrors — and is in such top shape that he never gets out of breath.

In 2011, a reflective Timberlake spoke to Vanity Fair about his career to that point. “The fact is, I look back, and I made a lot of choices because I felt I needed to be validated. And I just don’t feel that way anymore.” Why should he? With his disco-dancefloor strut, his shoulder shakes and hip shimmies, Timberlake is the best entertainer of his generation.

In the pre-Bieber era, Rolling Stone anointed Timberlake “The New King of Pop.” The crown still fits snugly over his perfectly moulded hair.

There's a part of Timberlake's success that seems to spring from his willingness to play politics. He's incredibly charismatic, but clearly measures the way he wields it. With him, being welcoming is fundamental to being entertaining, and while priority number one is to entertain, making sure fans are never alienated is a not-distant number two. It can't be easy to be that clearly excellent without exhibiting a hint of arrogance, but JT never breaks. He performs so hard that the nearest thing you can see to a crack is the projection that maybe the reason this guy is so outstanding onstage is that he compulsively need to be loved like so many charismatic pols. And even that, the blue-eyed soul master only evidences in shadow.

Maybe the path to being elected King of Pop is making promises you can deliver on. Last night, JT played the hits, strutted the strut, and hit the high-notes. No promise went unkept. And we all went home happy. If we're going to have a new King of Pop, it might as well be Justin Timberlake. From the looks of things, he's the perfect candidate.
