[Sam] Smith, who makes his San Diego headlining debut Tuesday at Valley View Casino Center, has been hailed as the “male Adele.”
This is not, however, because Ben Thomas, Adele’s guitarist is in Smith’s band, or because one of Smith’s three managers, former singer Elvin Smith (no relation), was once Adele’s opening act. Nor is it because two of Adele’s collaborators, Eg White and Fraser Smith, served as song writers and producers on Smith’s 2014 debut album, “In The Lonely Hour.”
BTW.... I've finally posted my first piano cover online, and it's none other than "Someone Like You." If you guys could listen, like, and subscribe, I would really appreciate it. This song means the world to me for a lot of different reasons and I'm thrilled to finally have the opportunity to showcase my talent. Thank you guys so much!
Tell me about it. There's a few of his songs that I don't mind, but he's always bothered me as a person. The whole "male Adele" comparisons are stupid because it's literally just because they're the only two recent soul artists who have managed to be that successful on pop radio; that doesn't make him the "male Adele." It just makes him one of the few soul artists that the general public is aware of. And I hate that his team keeps pushing him to play the "male Adele" card. It's really dumb. Adele is on an entirely different level.

I agree. I like some of his songs but he keeps wanting to be like Adele. Like when he made a speech in the grammy's i think? Where he thanked the guy who broke his heart and inspired him to write the album like oh my god. The guy wasn't even his ex or anything, he just pined for him. Creepy.

EXACTLY. And his speech was a total ripoff of Adele's Grammys acceptance speech, except nowhere near as heartfelt and touching. It's always bothered me that he feels the need to feed off of Adele's success to be successful himself; he's creating a whole new group of artists within the pop genre that try and replicate what the others did for success. It's no different from the pop girls. Most of them do whatever the others did to be successful; that's why so many of them are exploiting themselves sexually to sell music. Because it worked for artists like Madonna and Lady Gaga. It's no different with the soul artists. The genre itself is becoming more popular, I think, because of Amy, Adele, and Sam. But he is literally copying her every move. The Grammy speech, the vocal cord hemorrhage, everything. It's ridiculous. And I don't like that his team is kind of forcing him to feed off of her success and take advantage of it while she's on hiatus.

I agree with everything you said. Like they know he's gonna flop if he doesn't take the Adele route. I like his songs but can he just not for real. Like work on your next album. Plus, his success is like not even as big as a toenail compared to Adele.

Exactly. The Adele comparisons have always seemed so silly. And it's a shame that he and his team both are so dependent on the general public's idea that he's the "male Adele." I'm not saying he should stop making soul music. That's not the problem. The general public started calling him that because they're uneducated and know very few soul artists, being that most of them only listen to pop music. His team took that and ran with it and have overdone it so much that it's insane. And his likeliness to Adele obviously is going to have even more of an appeal while she's on hiatus because people will assume he's filling the gap while she's gone. And the shame of it is that the comparisons are inaccurate because his success is, like you said, immeasurable to the success Adele had with 21.

ugh this is why Adele needs to come back already so Sam can be his own person and not labeled as the male adele and see if he can do it without the name of Adele attached to him.

I have nothing against Sam as a person, other than I find him painfully overrated - not because of the Adele comparisons but because, in my opinion, he's nowhere near as good as we're led to believe, just like Ed Sheeran. However, I do feel that Sam's team need to let Sam be his own artist instead of being a carbon copy of another successful one. I mean, Sam could (or will) fall off the radar and be forgotten about the second Adele makes her return - what are his team going to do then?
I do agree though that the Adele 'cloning' is a little excessive - I mean, using pretty much everyone Adele's worked with, using Adele's Grammy speech as a template for his own, even thanking the guy that he wasn't in a relationship with at all for 'breaking his heart' - what even? And as for the vocal hemorrhage, it's a little unfair to compare that directly to Adele, but I do agree that it was a bit freaky that someone who's dubbed 'the male Adele' just happened to have exactly the same trouble as Adele did, even using the same doctor in the same hospital! (But that really can't be helped.)

I need new adele songs rn
Exactly. Like, he may be successful now, but what's he going to do when Adele comes back? He needs to do a musical self-examination. Because he's already had some pretty big collaborations with Disclosure, which is a huge departure from his solo material, he should be open to exploring other genres, because honestly, even some of the music on In the Lonely Hour is not entirely soul, I don't think. Not to the extent of Adele's music.
Anyways... Yeah, welcome to our Hell. We've been waiting four-and-a-half years for a new album. Fingers crossed we will get SOMETHING this year!

That's a very true statement; he is overrated, and not just for the Adele comparisons. Honestly, I don't even find his voice that appealing; it's good, but it's a tad whiny for my tastes. EXACTLY. His team should not be depending solely on his comparisons to Adele, because as soon as she comes back, what is he going to do? She was already established. She's not going to be dubbed the "female Sam Smith" while he goes on to have the best-selling album of the decade. The tables aren't going to turn. She's got the upper hand and for them to keep pushing for him to be like her, it wouldn't be smart career-wise.
Agreed. The vocal cord hemorrhage could not be helped, but I did find it very strange that it was the exact same thing Adele went through, and it was at the peak of his success (same with Adele), and he even used the same doctor as her. It can't be helped, but it's pretty freaky, and it doesn't help with the Adele comparisons.
