Yes, it plays a role in her success, I agree, but I think her massive success is MOSTLY due to her catchy music and perhaps her personality.
Perhaps you can enlighten us regarding the 80s/90s era in terms of how artists sold albums compared to today and whether you meant that these days, artists have a "handicap" with technology.
|
But why should their success be similar to GaGa? Don't get me wrong. NO ONE can deny that gaga's performances and music play a big part in her success, but so does those things I mentioned before, that's why I don't think any of her records, YET are impressive
(though her tour is doing outstandingly well, but it's also because she has a 360 deal)
80s/90s artists used to sell much more albums in general. Technology nowadays is a double-edged weapon to the music industry.
Advantage: great digital downloads, internet exposure, etc
Disadvantage: illegal downloading, affecting album sales

Unfortunately I do have a full time job and am unable to search for statistics until late this afternoon, but perhaps you would like to share those statistics that 80s/90s albums have sold more.
The technology age if anything has boosted sales of albums and singles. There are limitless supplies of a song on itunes or amazon mp3 while in the 80s and 90s, only certain amount of cassettes and CD singles were pressed. If you were at Sam Goody looking for the latest Madonna single and it was sold out, you'd have to wait a while before they ship more. Sales were probably not as high as the digital age.
If anything, it is physical CDs that may not be selling because a lot of people turn to itunes for that.
The illegal downloading to me is the equivalent of copying someone's cassette tape or CD - back then, that was the hindrance to CD/cassette sales. It's pretty much the same thing, so this era is nothing different than that.

Yea sure, I'll do that tomorrow, but for now, if you're interested
http://www.ifpi.org/content/library/view_35.pdf You can take a look at the graph in the second page, it represents the difference in shipments of recorded music 1999-2009 (shipments = physical of course), one might think "oh, it's because of digital albums sales", but no it's not. the HIGHEST selling digital album of all time is the fame, with only 1.5 million copies, compare that to the difference of shipments and it's really benign.
Yea, but the thing is, nowadays you can have ANY ALBUM within the palm of your hands in just 5 minutes...and for free.
20 years ago you had to go to the store, buy a bundle of empty cassets, make sure you have a dual cassette player, make sure that your friend/family member has the album that YOU want, then make sure they will allow you to rip them off. So, of course it's a hindrance, but it's absolutely nothing compared to:
*goes to ******* site/limewire*
*types album of desire*
"OH there it is!"
*downloads in 5 minutes*
*sigh*, so all in all, gaga is disadvantaged greatly in album sales, but advantaged in all that other noise

I don't wanna start a discussion with you dear, but Limewire is free and we are here for paid downloads.

1. Britney Spears - 5,647,912 (+12,575)
2. Lady GaGa - 5,638,602 (+19,382)
Only a difference of +9,311 from Lady GaGa becoming the most followed person on Twitter.com
I see GaGa has been on the haters' minds

The Fame wasn't released in the US until the end of October, which is when it sold that 24k...August 19 was its Canadian release date. Minor detail
