A hate crime is a crime committed designed to intimidate a whole group of people. If a group of middle eastern men who said anti semitic things then went and shot up a synagogue, it would be a hate crime.

Being a random victim of a crime doesn't necessarily mean it qualifies as a hate crime. Saying the kid is mentally unstable when he planned everything that transpired is really just to make people feel sorry for him. The media really should be ashamed of this TBQH!
