Are you kidding? Most of these types of referenda are as close to 50/50 as they come. Every single constituency in Ireland except ONE endorsed same-sex marriage. That's an overwhelming result, it's just the Irish system counts each vote to the end, not like governmental system that uses your vote for your constituency/state only like in the US or UK.
Ireland made history. Popular vote for gay marriage would likely fail in the UK, would easily fail in the US and would be up in the air in other EU countries with gay marriage and Canada.
