Not completely hard to believe (for initial reaction reviews), The Bends is more by the book Alternative Rock and OK Computer as we know now, was pushing the genre forward along with it's other elements and was overall a lot more dense.

I suppose it makes sense, considering something similar happened with Kid A, which has an 80 on Metacritic (although I think Kid A is a much greater jump from OK Computer than The Bends -> OK Computer).
