See, I'm a more technical musician. While I love artistry, when I write I focus more on the technical side of everything. I think "What's the weirdest chord I could use here?" and try it. I'm so picky with my work, I refuse to use anything orthodox unless it's for a throw-away
My lyrics always end up being more cold and calculated too. Like for my song Datura, when I wrote the lyrics I thought "Okay, I already have a message and two interweaving themes (plants and the Garden of Eden). How I can I use those ideas consistently together to make something coherent?" And while I guess brainstorming all of that takes creativity everything I make never feels very free. I get a lot that the music I make sounds sort of jazzy, and that's mostly because I refuse to use a bunch of plain major of minor chords in my song. If I have that, I end up adding a bunch of sevenths
It's kinda an obsession.
