Unapologetic - Rihanna
'Unapologetic' is Rihanna's fourth late Fall release in a row, and while not the best in her lengthy catalog of albums, it still stands strong and shows that the Pop Queen is far from slowing down. The album takes a more urban approach with over half of the tracks having at least a slight hip hop touch to them. Rih severely cut down on the dance pop songs here, with only the lackluster "Right Now" filling that role. While that track would have been great 5 years ago, in today's music climate it just sounds bland, basic, and late. One of the best tracks on the album comes in the form of the ultra-urban banger "Pour It Up", and other highlights include "Love Without Tragedy / Mother Mary" an obvious nod and insight on that fateful night, and "No Love Allowed", the token reggae influenced cut, which is another not so ambiguous nod to Chris Brown. "Jump" is another great track, with a brilliant "Pony" sample and insane dubstep break. As a matter of fact, there really isn't a bad song on the album. All the tracks are at least listenable. On that same coin, there are only a few AMAZING cuts. The album also seems to lack a clear direction. Akin to her last album, 'Talk That Talk', 'Unapologetic' is fairly shallow apart of the two or three meaningful ballads and is a more a nice collection of hit songs. While I do love the album and it will likely only get better to me in time, it is clearly a filler in her discography used to get some more hits, and there really is no shaking that. I hope that Rih takes a well deserved break and comes back next time with a more defined and stronger album like I know she can deliver.
The Essential tracks: "Diamonds", "Pour It Up", "Jump", "Love Without Tragedy / Mother Mary", "No Love Allowed"
