It's pretty simple, I think. Most western societies were initially inhabited by Native Americans. Europeans conquered and enslaved them. Africans were brought over to replace lost Natives. 'Hispanic' refers to the fact that a country's official language is Spanish and that the Europeans who founded it were from Spain. Being Hispanic does not make a person not Black or not White. It just means your country speaks Spanish.

BlackPower is on the money regarding Latinos. Hispanic is not a race and a lot of people don't seem to know that. I think it's hilarious. Hispanic is a culture and could be of any race. Christina Aguilera is Hispanic but she's a White-Hispanic. Let me see, Zoe Saldana is Dominican I believe but she's a black Dominican. Most Mexicans are descendants of Europeans (especially Spaniards) and the native folks indigendous to Mexico. Asians can be Hispanic depending on their birth place. Saying you're Puertorican or Cuban or whatever is exactly like saying you're American. It's not blood, it's nationality. There are so many Dominicans here in New York where I live who obviously have African ancestry and they'll look you dead-in-the-face and tell you they're not black. Having a Spanish-last name doesn't mean anything. Most African-Americans don't have traditional African names and in place have English names (etc Jackson) or Irish names (etc O'Brian) as a result of slavery. Yes, an English culture, yes we speak English, but we're primarily West African. And it's the same thing with our kin in the Carribean, South America, etc. Yes Spanish influences, yes they make speak Spanish, nevertheless, that doesn't make Black-Hispanics Spaniard.

He basically did his best to shame Black people and Blackness and erase Africans from their history. Plus, D.R. has had a rivalry with their neighbor Haiti, which far MORE Black and afro-centric, for centuries.

This is what I say. I look at it like this. I love the planet, I love all people but I'm a proud African-American. Very proud. Our unique history, the stuff we've been through, all our accomplishments, I cherish...

The whole, you know, folks wanting to be black or not, doesn't bother me. We need to stop getting upset at that. If they don't want to be a part of us, fine. Who cares. Let it go. It's like trying to be with someone in a relationship that doesn't want you.
