Well, Rihanna never really presented herself as a strong, independent woman—in fact,
her biggest hit is about being sent on a downward spiral by an unhealthy relationship. So take that for what it's worth; I'm not sure we could have expected much better from her.
But it is weird to hear that kind of pandering in a Destiny's Child song. I remember that "Cater 2 U" was my favorite track on
Destiny Fulfilled when it first came out, and then my (female) friend pointed out to me what a terrible message it has. It's too bad that the vocals and the instrumental are seductively sexy, because it make the song kind of hard to hate.
