Six deaths so far
Six people, including an 11-year-old boy and a surfer, were dead and the East Coast was a solid wall of red hurricane warnings Saturday as Irene lashed the North Carolina coast to begin what forecasters and authorities warned could be a catastrophic run north.
Neighbors said a woman came running out screaming, "Where's my baby?!" after high winds knocked a tree into an apartment complex Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va. Rescue crews searched for several hours before finding the boy's body.
Later in the afternoon, a tree fell on a car in Brunswick County, killing an occupant, Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya told the News & Messenger of Northern Virginia.
"This just recently occurred," Anaya said. "Troopers are still on scene and working the incident."
In Florida, the Volusia County Beach Patrol confirmed that a surfer was killed Saturday when he was knocked off his board at New Smyrna Beach, where surfers flocked to take advantage of 10-foot waves kicked up in the wake of Irene.

I'm sorry but some people need to use something call common sense, they do not heed the warning and risk their life.

Rest in peace to those who died thus far.
I hope that people realize that this is a ****ing HURRICANE and it's serious. Don't go outside and play in it, like it's a damn thunderstorm or something. A hurricane can and will kill you.

Yes, looking Irene in the "eye" is a death wish, like looking at Medusa.
I'm so witty.

My coworkers up here in Boston don't seem to be getting that. Sure, the wind and rain ain't gonna kill you, but a falling tree or a shattered window could. ALWAYS better safe than sorry.

It's already storming here and now I read that the power is off in Richmond which is like 45 minutes away from me? I'm about to get the **** out of here.

The winds are going to get stronger in 1 hour and in 4-5 hours the eye of the storm should be directly on Maryland.

You are really only going to experience rain until most likely later on or early in the morning Sunday.
