Oh you don't go gym then? I suggest that. And do a lot of compound exercises for when you're first starting out/trying to gain weight. Bench, squats, etc. All the major ones that you always hear about. Those use more than one muscle and will help increase your overall strength.

Ok, yeah. Mass gainer shakes are good and all but they're expensive as **** and have barely any servings. Such a waste! That's why I use my alternative.
I always take mine in the morning. And a regular protein shake after my workout later on in the day.
1 cup of oatmeal [dry]
1 banana
1 tablespoon of peanut butter
1 teaspoon of flax seed oil [you could probably get away with not using this]
2 eggs
2 cups of low fat milk
1-2 scoops of protein mix [I only take one because my intake of protein later on in the day is plenty]

that has nothing to do it with it since there was once a time when I used to have a subscription and I hate to RUN to the restroom otherwise I would have made a mess in front of everyone, thank god I had a sweat jacket with me to put on my mouth and hold some of it

Well you will have to shed the fat with cardio or HIIT training. But it's hard to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time which is why people usually divide it into "cutting" where you eat less to lose body fat, but also might lose some muscle, and "bulking" to gain muscle but gain some fat too. If you eat way more calories than you need gaining fat is kind of inevitible. You have quite an unusual combination going. Not necessarily bad but very different.
Most people do legs/abs and split triceps and biceps on different days.
5 times a week is quite a lot. Are you resting enough? Because if ou overkill your muscles they will have a harder time developing

I do 5 reps per set. And yeah, when I was doing a lot of cardio I wasn't gaining any muscle so...
For my "arm" day I do bench press, bicep curls, military press, and barbell rows.
Also: for diet. I'm generally good at getting protein but most of it IS through eggs, whey protein, tofu, and yogurt. Does anybody know any more, uh, exciting vegetarian protein-heavy snacks.

had my first two Crossfit workouts yesterday. They're pretty good/hard. Just a bit worried with the way they structure their workouts.
a lot of the bigger strength & power movements (squats, deadlifts, cleans) are done at very high repetitions which I'm convinced is not good for overall technique and strength development.
I'll try Crossfit for a couple months and see if i get any results

dairy? full cream milk, cottage cheese, greek yoghurt etc.

Well recently I've been having more milk and been doing the whole yogurt + granola a lot. It's good but i'm sick of it. Are there any good snacks you know with those?

i don't really care about the taste of food because i see food as fuel for energy but here's two foods that i do mix...
cottage cheese + baby food sache (taste - 4/10)
greek yogurt + baby food sache (taste - 8/10)
have you ever thought of adding fish occasionally into your diet?

Hmmm, I'll try those.
And I've thought about it but in general, I want to just not eat any animal. I understand that can put me at a disadvantage but it is possible to get lots of protein other ways. I'm a huge foodie and while I realize not everything is gonna taste like fancy thai curry I'd like some variety.

General mass is a different story, if you're really skinny you could amp up your food intake or buy mass gainers (the latter is probably easier and more effective) you'd be good.

Fruits and veggies are great for general health but they won't do you much, physically. Bananas are a great pre-workout snack though.
Rice isn't a bad carb--depending on how its cooked. Why care you cutting it out of your diet?

Oh well, it's purely because of financially reasons. Unless it's really necessary, I wouldn't really buy them. I'm in no hurry, unless mass-gaining is a process that has to be fast.

My statement about rice might've been a bit ignorant, does it have any major nutritional value for people working to gain muscle? I've always seen as a filler in my plate. Unless there are, as you suggested, ways to cook it that enhance it's benefits.

I'd up the # of reps per set to umm about 8 to 10? That seems good. I'd go with 10.

OR you could do a descending scale with higher weights each set. Like you do 10 reps, then 8, then 6, then 4, then 2, and finally 1. Each consecutive set should be higher than the last by like 5lbs (or higher, depending on whats comfortable w/you).
At 1 rep you should be at your absolute maximum limit.

Rice is filler. But since you're not fat your carb intake shouldn't really worry you.
Oh no mass gaining doesn't have to be fast. You just have to get the right amount of food in your system at the right time. If you can get all the food you'll need (which is a LOT) then you won't really need the mass gainers and whey.
I use protein shakes bc i'm in College 3/4s of the year and i don't have the time to eat chicken breasts and steak all day. So i have to substitute. But its not a life and death situation if you don't use them.

3-5 reps per set is usually gonna gain strength and not muscle.
For muscle gain you should use weights that allow you to do 8-12 reps per set.
I don't know much about vegetarian food but try greek yoghurt instead of normal yoghurt if you don't already. It has more protein than normal one.

Studies are divided but lots of athelts do long cardio and still have muscles so it's really up to the indiviual body I'd say
BUt I prefer HIIT because it's faster and in my opinion a lot more exciting than long runs
