OK Tops' album from 2014 was really good and I found out so late about it, I've been intending to check out the singles from this yr
Coffee was better w/o the Wale for me and even then it's like an 8 for me just a tad overrated. but it's awwl good, RAWM is a beast of a song, Gosh is an amaze driving song and Know Yourself is up there on that tape
20. CHVRCHES, "Leave A Trace"
I enjoyed their soundtrack contributions and I was not disappointed by their comeback single. It's so radio-ready. This would be a surefire ht if Taylor did it, right?
19. Alessia Cara, "Here"
The most relatable song for introverts everywhere. I love this. The whole concept and everything, sorry. Yeah, sure she can just stay her annoying emo ass home and there wouldn't be a problem... but then that would mean we wouldn't get a song where young people can act all cool and above partying. Like I said before, we kind of need those anti- artists and anti- songs and albums that balance things out.
18. Kendrick Lamar, "King Kunta"
There's heavy funk and soul influence here. Something new for Kendrick and something refreshing for Hip-Hop again. This is another anthem for those who work hard for theirs, and just want to give the big FU to the people that doubted their dreams and aspirations.
17. Alabama Shakes, "Don't Wanna Fight"
It starts with a Curtis Mayfield-style guitar groove, Brittany Howard then jumps in with that loud raspy voice James Brown style and then gets layered with funk! Alabama Shakes is bringing back that deep soul music and substance, describing the struggle of the working class and emoting her heart out.
16. Jamie xx, "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times) [feat. Young Thug & Popcaan]"
Jamie surprised us in 2015 with his ability to create this pop gem that combines a sample from a ‘70s a cappella group, The Persuasions, a 90's documentary and rapper Young Thug who has the most distinct voice on urban radio. There's so much fun and joy in this track. Song of the summer? The most unlikely collaboration of the year? Yup!
15. Kendrick Lamar, "Alright"
This was once the only song on TPAB that I like before the entire album caught up and grew on me. Not only is it a bop but the song is proactive, a rallying cry for those protesting discrimination and injustice in America.
14. Unknown Mortal Orchestra, "Multi-Love"
"Multi-Love" is a trippy psychedelic jam that takes soul music as its template and splashing the canvas with futurist synths and vocal effects. It's sad that nothing else from their album topped this for me.
13. Susanne Sundfør, "Kamikaze"
"Kamikaze" is a beautiful heartfelt song building up to be an infectious disco-tempo record before fading with a dark piano section.
12. Sleater-Kinney, "Surface Envy"
Comeback of the year? The quick and fiery "Surface Envy" proves the nearly decade-long hiatus the group hasn't missed a beat. Literally, the guitars and drumming is just as good as it was 10 years ago. The song is essentially about them reuniting.
11. Run the Jewels, "Close Your Eyes (And Count To F*ck)"
Even before Kendrick, RTJ were advocates for black lives and been heavily into politics. The production is a mix of chopped vocal samples and distorted guitar riffs, and RTJ and Zack De La Rocha deliver a political rhetoric. But the "Close Your Eyes (And Count To F*ck)" video alone is powerful than anything.
Last two sets...
30. TOPS, "Anything"
29. Miguel, "Coffee"
28. Kelela, "Rewind"
27. Courtney Barnett, "Pedestrian At Best"
26. Carly Rae Jepsen, "Run Away With Me"
25. Drake, "Know Yourself"
24. Nao, "Apple Cherry"
23. Susanne Sundfør, "Accelerate"
22. Jamie xx, "Gosh"
21. Janet Jackson, "No Sleeep"
20. CHVRCHES, "Leave A Trace"
19. Alessia Cara, "Here"
18. Kendrick Lamar, "King Kunta"
17. Alabama Shakes, "Don't Wanna Fight"
16. Jamie xx, "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times) [feat. Young Thug & Popcaan]"
15. Kendrick Lamar, "Alright"
14. Unknown Mortal Orchestra, "Multi-Love"
13. Susanne Sundfør, "Kamikaze"
12. Sleater-Kinney, "Surface Envy"
11. Run the Jewels, "Close Your Eyes (And Count To F*ck)"
I like what you had to say about Here. It kind of turned me around on the song in all honesty. King Kunta is my favorite off of Kendrick's album, I Know There's Gonna Be Good Times is like sunshine caught on record sunshine, and Run The Jewels provided the near perfect mix of attitude, humor, and politics on their album. Nice to see them so high.
That whole album set is wonderful. I still haven't given enough time to Natalie yet though
D'Angelo had me intrigued back at the beginning of the year and I really really loved... Really Love, but I guess I didn't follow through with that album.
Just going through your lists. Your taste is perfect. How did Run the Jewel's make this year's list?
Black Messiah a bit low
Glad to see Vince Staples getting deserved recognition
10. Years & Years, "King"
Before I was a "King" fan I was a "Desire" fan and before I was a fan of "Desire" I was a Years & Years hater. I just could not understand what the hype was, lo and behold, "King" grew on me and it's now starting off the top 10. Olly's vocals soar over these pounding synths. This is such a feel-good uptempo that sounds so festival-ready because of its singalong chorus.
09. Grimes, "REALiTi (Demo)"
Along with “Go," this is probably her most accessible track to date. I love the dreamy pop melodies and lo-fi sound. This track is also sensual.
08. Future Islands, "A Dream of You and Me"
I was late on the Future Island ship but at least I got into “A Dream of You and Me" before it was too late. This is such a beautiful tune that puts me at ease.
07. The Weeknd, "Earned It"
This is my thot song of 2015. It's so intense and and sensual, it makes perfect sense that this was one of the leading soundtrack singles that compliments the film. And as sexual this is song may be, The Weeknd also admires the women outside the bedroom for once. I also love the use of real instruments in the production.
06. Susanne Sundfør, "Fade Away"
This single premiered in early December of 2014, but it had so much impact in 2015. The beat and throbbing bass turns this heartbreakingly sad song into a joyful dance tune. Very similar to her Swedish sister Robyn. The song ends with a fabulous synth solo before the final bridge and chorus.
05. CHVRCHES, "Clearest Blue"
I've said before, I LOVE build-up songs! It's a long buildup before taking off to its EDM drop/thrilling climax but it's worth the wait.
04. Natalie Prass, "My Baby Don't Understand Me"
"My Baby Don’t Understand Me" is about a relationship that's on the rocks, as the chorus builds gradually from heartsick lament to a heartfelt plea. The instrumentation is so rich and warm. For someone that wasn't in a single relationship in 2015 I sure love me some depressing ass ****. But what a bridge!
03. Kelela, "A Message"
My favorite R&B song of the year. Not your typical love song, "A Message" is about the rejection stage that comes before lust and the darker realization. What's most hard-hitting is the climax at the end where Kelela emotes with her powerful vocals. This sums up what Arca’s production on “A Message” does to me:
02. Father John Misty, "True Affection"
FJM falsetto, harmonies and lyrics evoke so much heartache. The synthpop production is so smooth, very R&B leaning but almost glitchy at the same time. Such a tune! Something unexpected from an artist that use to be in Fleet Foxes.
01. Tame Impala, "Let It Happen"
This was by no means overrated or predictable, it's just that damn good. Perhaps I jumped on the Tame Impala bandwagon a little late, two or three years after Lonersim, but "Let It Happen" solidified my love for them. Nearly eight minutes of the Beatles meets Daft Punk with the band’s signature psychedelic and propulsive grooves. It turns into beast mode during it's second half which features great drum and guitar sections, synth-y jam sessions and a vocoder harmony section where listeners can basically mumble and make-out their own lyrics. I could have this on rotation and listen to it all day. This will easily go up there as one of my favorite songs of the decade. Nothing that dropped after "Let It Happen" was even a #1 contender.
