What are Florence's songs about? I don't quite get where she is coming from.
Florence has a different approach. Her lyrics are not literal at all, they are very descriptive, and they are all about symbolism.
Lungs to me is about the different emotions of a rocky relationship.
Ceremonials is about spirits, memories, biblical references, graveyards.
And that's probably why Florence will never breakthrough on mainstream radio like other UK artists. Her songs are too out there for the average listener.

They are too raw, emotional, complex, and brilliant for the average listener.
Florence is getting big on TV- Shake it OUt has been on two significant TV shows in two weeks, and being on that Game of Thrones trailer was also good promo for Seven Devils.
The ambiguity of the lyrics, mixed with their grandness (or bombasticness depending on tastes) makes a lot of her music perfect for soundtracks, and I expect to see a lot more of her on TV and movies (especially with the whole Titanic soundtrack bit).
I'm not an abstract thinker so I think people like Florence, Bjork and MIA are NEVER going to appeal to my fully. I'm a lawyer so I'm very much analytical having to know and understand what I'm listening too.
I can't give Florence an honest rate because I fail to grasp her meanings. I'll just base it off whether I like it or not.

I don't pay attention to MIA's lyrics most of the times tbqh

Yeah, just get into the groove. Although something like Shake It Out is very literal - it's kind of like Mariah's Make It Happen, through an art-rock lens.

That's what I love about her music though, take 10 Dollar for example.
You can just ignore the lyrics and bop the **** out.
But when you sit down and really listen to it, it's a really well-written song about sex work/child prostitution/what women in the 3rd world are forced into.

Why does Duffy only have six singles? What happened to her?
Half of them are a yawn but the other half knock
The strings from "Rain on Your Parade" are awesome.

Lily's basically the opposite to Florence in this case. Her lyrics are very direct, in your face, unapologetic. It's funny that these two girls are my favorites on this rate...

And the one who combines the abstract and the direct the best, Amy, is by far my favorite. Oh man, that voice and those words ...

I'm not into her first album very much, but Back To Black *****.
Lily Allen is easily my favorite from the rate, for a variety of reasons. From a feminist point of view, she's just an unparalleled woman in pop. She's so effortlessly empowering to young girls, and I've always really admired that about her. She doesn't care about what a woman in pop is supposed to be. She values cleverness and isn't afraid to speak her mind. I feel like more young girls should be exposed to her and her messages, especially with songs like The Fear and 22.
