Well, Like A Prayer only had one #1 hit (which, funnily enough, was
not Express Yourself). The later singles on the album didn't chart as high (or at all). Though hailed now as a masterpiece, critical response at the time was nothing special.
In fact, you don't really have to look much further than Rolling Stone's opinion of the album to see how things change over time. At the time of release, Rolling Stone reviewed Like A Prayer with 3.5/5 stars. In 2004, they re-reviewed the album and gave it a 5/5. For comparison, Born This Way received at a 4/5 at the time of release. I'm not saying that it's going to be hailed as a masterpiece in the future, just that controversial material from huge stars can be perceived negatively initially but reviewed later.
Also, the themes admit some similarity between the two.
