I'm here for a Greatest Hits album as long as it's released in November, with a couple of hit singles. Although I really think she should wait at least one more album before releasing a compilation album.
Breakaway was definitely a smash, especially in the U.S. The fact that is has sold over a million when it peaked a couple years before digital sales really started playing a role in mainstream music really says something. Breakaway was the song that truly launched Kelly's career. Without it, SUBG probably may not have happened and she could easily have ended up just like the other American Idol winners.

SUBG was a smash waiting to happen when pop/rock was the IT sound. It would have done well regardless of whether or not Breakaway was released first or not. And again, using the "pre digital era" excuse is just a crutch. You're only defending Breakaway because you love the damn song so much, and consider it an even greater ballad than BOY, but, no. Not a smash. BOY was a smash.

Of course Breakaway was a smash. And I've always hated that song. I've grown to like it, but I remember when z100 played it nonstop when it first came out. It was just so boring.
There's a reason they decided to put it on the album, and RENAME the album for that matter.

A song released in the middle of 2004 that has sold over 1 million digital copies is a song that would sell AT LEAST 3.5 million today, probably over 4 million. Any song that big is a smash. Hasn't Breakaway sold more than BTHE? and doesn't it get more recurrent play than BOY?
And no, there is no guarantee that SUBG would have smashed without Breakaway. There are lots of phenomenal songs that didn't smash simply because the circumstances surrounding the songs' release were unfavorable. If Breakaway hadn't put Kelly back on the scene, SUBG may have gone unnoticed.

Flawed logic though. BTHE was the third single, meaning the album had already sold probably more than 1 million units in the US alone (yes, the numbers were that big). So who would download a single again if they already had the album it was on.
Breakaway the song was obviously out before the album was there so people had to buy it if they liked it.

Digital sales were so small in that era that it doesn't really matter. People weren't rushing to buy download Breakaway before the album dropped because people just weren't downloading much yet. It's not until 2006/2007 that digital sales really started to affect things.
I'm not even trying to argue what song was a bigger smash. The fact is that all four of the first four singles from Breakaway were smashes, and saying otherwise is delusional. They all achieved great things in their runs.
