It's basically a streaming service like Spotify or Tidal, created by Apple. A bunch of independent record labels (including the Beggars Group, which owns XL) were protesting it and refused to partake in the service's 3-month trial period because it was free, and therefore if people stopped purchasing music on iTunes and did the trial period, none of the artists would get paid. However, when Taylor Swift made a statement in support of these independent labels and artists and basically called them out for not paying the artists, Apple revised the conditions of the 3-month free trial so that artists would be paid.
