02 | GOTYE F/ KIMBRA
"Somebody That I Used To Know" |
WRITE-UP:
Placing at the runner-up spot is the next of the Big 3 of 2012. The collaboration between Gotye and Kimbra just blew everyone with the mid-tempo indie pop ballad Somebody That I Used To Know. I believe that there is no questioning why this ranked as the runner-up song in my list because of the global success it has attained. I honestly admit I am really not a fan of both artists as I can just easily ignore their releases including this one. I just can't recall how I really started liking this song. Perhaps with the right amount of radio airplay, promotion and different covers help me to wake up one day and give this song a try. After a couple of listen, I started liking it a bit. As weeks pass by, my favorite radio station just keeps playing this every other hour that there is no escaping it. The xylophone hooks simply mesmerize me until I finally realized its beauty. Somebody That I Used To Know climbed the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100 slowly until it has reached the top spot. With the impressive performance of this song in airplay and digital downloads, there is no stopping this song as it just logged 8 weeks at the top spot. It also attain a similar feat on my countdown as it spent 20 long weeks in my personal countdown, four of them at the top spot. At some point, I was so confident this will be my #1 song of the year until someone just snatched that privilege from Gotye and Kimbra. Somebody That I Used To Know is one of ATRL's favorite of the year and congrats to Gotye and Kimbra as they successfully made a crossover in the mainstream. Next goal perhaps is to break away from their one-hit wonder status.

2010: B.O.B F/ HAYLEY WILLIAMS "Airplanes"
2011: JENNIFER LOPEZ F/ PITBULL "On The Floor"

01 | CARLY RAE JEPSEN
"Call Me Maybe" |
WRITE-UP:
Finally, the time has come to reveal my Song of the year. It clearly belongs to the third member of the Big 3 of 2012 and it is from Carly Rae Jepsen with Call Me Maybe. 2012 paved the way of breakthrough acts scoring the biggest hits of the year. Fun., Gotye and Carly Rae Jepsen truly surprised everyone by the time their respective singles are slaying the charts. Carly Rae Jepsen just literally stole the crown from Gotye as my #1 song for 2012 with the viral hit everyone is singing and lip-syncing about. The year 2012 will not be be completed if Call Me Maybe is missing in the list. This song just set the world in a pop frenzy of covers and parodies with its inescapable charisma. Parody videos from Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Katy Perry contribute to its phenomenal success. When I first heard this, it's really cute. I never thought this will turn from a little David into a gigantic Goliath when it comes to commercial success worldwide. Call Me Maybe established a number of records on the Billboard Hot 100 particularly spending 9 long weeks at the top spot, one of the longest for 2012. It also had an impressive chart run in my countdown; it spent a total of 21 long weeks on the top 20, where it holds the record of the longest weeks in my countdown and 5 weeks of those ruling my list. That is enough reason to place this as my song of the year. With regards to the music video, it is one of my favorites of the year especially that ending part which everyone knows already. Carly Rae Jepsen released the best pop single of 2012 as she sings about infatuation and inconvenience of a love at first sight. I am sure there will be members here that will comment that this song is too overrated or overplayed but let me tell you this; songs that spend too many weeks at the top spot are overplayed and considered the biggest hit of the year. So to conclude the journey of more than 3000 comments of this thread, Carly Rae Jepsen takes the Song Of The Year with Call Me Maybe.
2009: BLACK EYED PEAS "I Gotta Feeling"
2010: EMINEM F/ RIHANNA "Love The Way You Lie"
2011: BRITNEY SPEARS "Till The World Ends"
