Considering the times they were in, I think they were justified to an extent. How would you react to a constant threat of Muslim invasion? Plus the small piece of land that Christians wanted to reclaim along with other territories in North Africa, Asia Minor and Arabia and Persia were once parts of the Roman Empire. Guess who owns them now.

Nor were the battles of islamic conquest which started in 634 the only wars fought in the name of Islam, so what's your point?
Anyway, in contrast to Islamic Holy war which began in the 7th century and whose main goal was to conquer and subjugate non-islamic territories in accordance with surah 9:29 which calls for subjugation of jews and christians, the goal of the crusades was "to liberate" ( ) the holy land which had been conquered by Muhammad's closest companions some 6 years after his death.
So there's a BIG difference between christian "holy wars" and muslim "holy wars"
