Yes. There were things I liked better in the book. The movie glosses over Amazing Amy in one quick scene, but the book delves deep into the psychological damage it caused her, how badly it scarred her, how her parents used and "perfected" their child for fame and success. In the book you really got a sense of her disdain for her parents. Amazing Amy was the root of her psychological problems, the reason she wouldn't let anyone "perfect" her ever again.
I preferred the "his" and "hers" povs of the book, the way Amy played the "cool girl" who's content pleasing her husband and his friends. I missed the scenes with their friends. Those omissions made her "cool girl" speech later on less impactful. And I missed small details like his disgust when he saw her angrily slapping moisturizer all over her body, trying to fight the inevitable. Those little domestic snapshots added up.
I also found the movie to be a little
too satirical, a little too on the nose with its critiques of the way the media treats murder cases (the Nancy Grace figure was way over the top) at the expense of thrills and suspense. The book struck a better balance.
But there were moments that worked better onscreen than on the page -- the Basic Instinct scene with the explosion of blood and semen...amazing. That's when the movie really soared for me. That and the abrupt Eyes Wide Shut ending.
