They still have legacies (Janet is questionable, but I feel that she can ignite people's love with her in the right moment).

The public turns on every artist, but it's how you come back from that that makes you stronger. You think Aretha's flopped eras hurt her, especially when she had a comeback in the '80s? I think when you built up your status over years and decades, no one can really take that away from you. It's those artists who only had a short time of public attention that struggle to have a long-lasting legacy after a flop moment.

Provide specific examples then. Because as far as I know, there isn't any album with an 85+ Metacritic score that was also a monstrously commercially successful era.

That was hyperbole; but Elvis has sold far more records since '91 than Marley. Elvis has sold ~36M albums in the SSE (even more than MJ), Marley in the 12-15M range (not in the reported top 50 artists).

So people with names 1/100th less powerful made even more acclaimed music and managed to slay harder. Are you planing to dismiss everything that doesn't benefit you as an exception. What about Like a Prayer itself the only pop girl album that is supposedly more acclaimed. It was a monster era and don't come with the it was the 80s album sales thing because it was a monster era for the standards of that age as well.
