Okay. Listened to the album half a dozen times now and I feel I can begin to judge it.
It is stellar.
I loved both (Bright) Lights and Halcyon (Days). And contrary to most, I have no problem with selling out. In fact I enjoy it. 1989 is my favorite TSwift album. BBTM is my favorite Weeknd album. I fully expected to enjoy this. Especially after the four (awesome) promo singles.
But I was not prepared for just HOW great this was going to be. Seriously. With 25 tracks, the sheer numbers alone suggest that there would be at least one or two duds. At least one or two FILLERS, at minimum.
But after five listens, I couldn't delete a single track. I keep trying to choose my least favorite out a few of the "same-ish" ones (especially on the deluxe) but they're all great in their own way. Ellie's voice, her writing, the production, the emotion... it all works. Literally my only problem with the album is the altering on her voice on the chorus of We Can't Move To This. But that's only because I love that song SO much, and I'm annoyed that we can't clearly hear her voice on the chorus. Anyway. Track by track:
Aftertaste:
9.5/10: One of the more electronic tracks, and one of the few that I think would fit on Halcyon. Like others have said, the transition from the intro to this is probably the best transition ever. I HATE intros/outros/interludes, so the fact that Ellie made me like the intro on this is really impressive.
Something In The Way You Move:
10/10: I found this one quite generic at first. Didn't really like it. But (and this is SUPER common with Ellie songs) it got stuck in my head and grew on me and grew on me and now I find myself singing it all the time. It's adorable.
Keep On Dancin:
11/10: One of my favorites. Those WHISTLES. Whistling in music is so overdone, but the whistles in this song are somehow... DARK!111 Ellie (as usual) put her original spin on things and made a fantastic, innovative track.
On My Mind:
10/10: I love this song and I don't understand why so many dislike it. It's a TOUCH basic, but whatever. The verses are great. And I like that she actually wrote a diss track lol. And in my opinion, this is a thousand times more inspired than Burn. (I love Burn, but it is basic as hell. Her MOST generic song.)
Around You:
8/10: One of the weakest tracks on the standard, but the fact that I still rated it an eight says something. It's really cute... really feel-good. And the end really builds up. Still good.
Codes:
11/10: STOP. TALKING IN CODES. YES! I cannot get that chorus out of my head. No matter how many other songs I listen to, this one always creeps back in. And again, she takes what might have been (in another artist's hands) a basic beat and really put something new to it. The verses really elevate the song. Honestly her writing reminds me of Taylor's (and this is a compliment). This is WHY she can make a straight pop album without it sounding horribly uninspired. She's such a great writer and has such an ear for music that there's always something interesting to pick up in each song. Oh and this should definitely be a single sometime.
Holding On For Life:
10/10: I REALLY like this. Don't understand why some are calling it filler. The choir effect really works. It really stands out for me, actually. And it's one of her best (pre)choruses.
Love Me Like You Do:
9/10: Ugh. It's a great song, don't get me wrong. I've just heard it way too many times.
Don't Need Nobody:
10/10: What... what even is this!? Somebody else hit it on the head when they said it reminded them of Don't Tell Em. And if you'd told me two months ago that Ellie was gonna have her own Don't Tell Em I would have laughed. But again, she works it!
Don't Panic:
8/10: If I HAD to delete one song from the standard.... no. No. I couldn't do it. This one just fades into the background a BIT for me. It's still good though.
We Can't Move To This:
8/10: Ugh. The effects on the chorus ruin an otherwise PERFECT song. I love the verses on this one, and the "We. Can't. Move to thiiiiis, we don't even taaalk boy we don't even... kiiiiiis!" is amazing. Ugh.
Army:
12/10: My third favorite song of hers ever, after Explosions and Goodness Gracious. It is SO beautiful, so perfect, so warm, so happy... I love it. And the second half of the song is just majestic. I could listen to it for weeks on end. (In fact I did. It was the only song that was able to kick Hello to the curb haha.)
Lost And Found:
8/10: It's really good. And I love the folk influences. It's just a little bit lacking for me.
Devotion:
10/10: Simply beautiful. That tingling, electronic chorus is everything.
Scream It Out:
10/10: Again. Beautiful. Some of her absolute best lyrics. Anyone complaining about the lack of "old Ellie" needs to listen to this one
(So yes, I just rated every track on the standard version an eight or higher. That's how good this album is.)
The Greatest:
9/10: Just a really nice, sweet song. I'm actually enjoying hearing her sing about positive things. This album is proof that you don't have to write about horrific breakups or make a "dark, edgy" album to put out quality work. You can be stable, sane, and happy and still write great songs. All these songs about Dougie are so cute. You can literally feel how happy she is through the music. The bridge in this one >>>>>>
I Do What I Love:
10/10: This is ****ing weird and I LOVE it! "Bitches gotta eat!" LMAO! It's so... out there. Experimental Ellie strikes again. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad there's ONLY one track like this, and I'm glad it's only on the deluxe, but... yeah. It's awesome.
Paradise:
9/10: Solid. Have another drink, have another drink on me... I really like how she sings "Paradiiiiise"
Winner:
9/10: Liking the slightly ominous vibes. "The winner takes... she takes it all."
Heal:
7.5/10: Just a little bit dull. Kind of a cathartic closer though, which is good.
Outside:
9.5/10: I actually really hated this song at first (mostly cuz I was disappointed cuz I LOVED I Need Your Love) but it grew on me immensely (it was a big radio hit here in Canada) and now I love it.
Not gonna rate the Target tracks cuz I've only heard them a couple times but... yeah. Basically, this is an amazing album. It's top three for me, along with Badlands and Beauty Behind The Madness. I'm really really happy. I've been a fan of Ellie's since I heard her on Tinie Tempah's Wonderman (so ALMOST since the beginning) and I enjoy all three albums for different reasons. Lights is a fantastic alternative indie-feeling effort. Halcyon is a dark electropop magnum opus. And this is a top-notch majestic pop stadium filler. Like with Taylor and The Weeknd, I have no problem with artists "selling out" so long as they're still creating amazing music.
I honestly can't rank the three albums because on any given day, I might prefer one over the other. They're all different, but they're all great and they all still sound like Ellie.
The ONLY ONLY ONLY negative thing I can say is that there's no epic ballad a la Explosions. That's it. And that's a tiny complaint, considering how fantastic all the songs are on here.
