I might be wrong, but I would guess because they wanted the Hot 100 to be a singles chart, so they didn't want non-singles (i.e. album tracks) to chart? Of course, they changed that now. I think it's better this way.

About my airplay comment, I meant airplay alone can sell songs massively. Radio airplay is a better form of promotion than a music video or live performances. For example Take Care by Drake is doing very well off only radio airplay. Songs like Beautiful People by Chris Brown have music videos and high profile live performances and haven't really been big hits.

Obviously as many forms of promotion as possible are ideal, but if you can only choose one, radio airplay is the best if you want your song to sell a lot.

It's even worse for the UK people, since it was chosen as the 3rd single all the way last year, and they're getting the music video like 6 months after it peaked in the chart.

Sometimes they don't even release music videos at all! Drake hasn't released a video for Make Me Proud, his 2nd single. Lil Wayne hasn't released a music video for She Will. Jay-Z/Kanye haven't released a music video for H.A.M.

Their fans are so patient and calm for the most part. Imagine how people would've acted if Judas, or S&M, or Firework, or Marry the Night were promoted as singles with no music video?

Not to mention, the big example of Set Fire to the Rain.
