I think I remember hearing some commentary on a Simpsons DVD (I used to be a huge fan of the show and watched the episodes with the director's commentary ), that a huge portion of the writers of The Simpsons come out of Harvard and other Ivy League schools, so they are all highly educated (Harvard is also pretty known for secret societies and stuff)
