Planningtorock's first album for years is really quite a polarizing release. Honestly though, there really isn't any musical reason for it to be polarizing, it's just the subject matter (mostly it revolves around 2k14 gender and gender identity politics). What she's saying isn't a lie though, but it definitely is preaching to the choir. Luckily, I AM a member of that said choir. The album contains gritty dance numbers with edited spooky vocals. The closer Patriarchy Over & Out (which was released in 2012 so won't show up on my songs list) is a perfect example of the politically strong lyrics while still managing to call all to the dancefloor.
9. Caribou - Our Love
Caribou always interested me with his rhythmically intense yet calming groovy Indie Rock, but with Our Love he pretty much went full 2014 and full Dance. Maybe a little trend jumping (I hear some Kelela/Jessy Lanza/HTDW/etc influence) but it works so well I can't criticize. The dance rhythms on this kick some major ass and the vocals are distant. Apathetic/depressed sounding Dance music is not a new thing, but it IS a good thing so I'm glad Caribou pulled it off.
8. Giant Claw - DARK WEB
Soooo I heard this described as "Vaporwave" but meh, I would disagree. It's more or less just a plunderphonics album, with some of the source material pulling from what I guess to be R&B probably from the 90s/early 2000s. A lot of plunderphonics classics really just make sure to make the music smooth, breathy, and seemless, but Giant Claw wants his music to be jagged, almost unfinished sounding. There's an amazingly demented feeling to all of it, with all its intense buildups and releases happening almost spontaneously.
7. Aphex Twin - Syro
Aphex Twin was never consistent. Even his classic albums contained amazing material next to honestly non-classic material. It's part of his appeal, sort of. But with Syro, he definitely released his most consistently enjoyable release yet. Heavy on the grooves, light on the ambient, he manages to create his playfully danceable material without the groove stopping (until the final song, which DOES fit into the album). It was a surprising album for me, and definitely a good entry point for his discography for new fans.
6. Tobacco - Ultima II Massage
This year was the first year I really got into Tobacco, and I'm glad I did. He released a super-solid album. It's sort of like Psychedelic Noise-Pop. The first half of the album is more hard hitting with Hip-Hop influences, while the second is a little more calmer and about melody. It's sort of a distorted drug addled mess, but the musical aesthetic is on point and original. It has a good level of energy that can fit almost any mood, too.
I feel so lame going through your lists and only knowing a handful of stuff I'll bookmark this thread and use it as a list of new material to check out.
Also I agree with what you wrote about Little Red, Tough Love, LP1 and BWET!
Oh and I hope How To Dress Well is in the top 5
I really enjoyed All Love's Legal, Our Love and Syro. The other two are not for me.
Yeah I didn't expect you to like the other two Did I recommend Dark Web to you or did you just find it off my playlist (or through another place)?
