If you don't think labels are very careful about how they present their artists to the public from the very start then you don't know anything about the music industry, in Xtina's case she was clearly headed in an adult contemporary route, which is what was standard for female solo artists at the time. Britney's sound and aesthetic was highly unusual for a solo female artist then.

Britney's sound was not unusual, it was already popular with Spice Girls, and her aesthetic was Janet Jackson. The music released under Xtina's name was a variety of sounds. Even then, Xtina was always showcased as a vocalist first, not a performer like Britney.

Britney took the whole world by storm, Taylor hasn't even gone close to Britney as a celebrity and icon. She has the sales, though.

Both massively successful artists, but Taylor hasn't been around long enough to have a legacy like Britney has established. You have to have influence (so many artists cite Britney as an influence, Taylor not so much yet), longevity (Britney has had successful comebacks, Taylor hasn't had a break yet), and an appreciation across generations.
