They didn't return to Nu-metal. This album is hard rock (well "hard" compared to the alternative pop and soft rock being played on Alternative). But yeah the music from this album doesn't get played on Alternative anymore.
I've seen several interviews of Linkin Park talking about this album and they practically implied that this record is a big f*** you to Alternative radio.
