"If You Go Away" is just or nearly as good as "Can't Let Go" and "Come Back To Me", which are among the very best singles Mariah and Janet have released.
The lowdown: For a song that's all about getting it on, this third single from Boyz II Men's debut album, Cooleyhighharmony, isn't really that sexy—blame an overly aggressive sexuality that kills the bedroom vibe—though it's still got a nice groove. Despite being the group's first effort to miss the top ten of the Hot 100, it reached #1 on the R&B chart—and inspired Beyoncé's "Countdown," for which we should all be very thankful.
The vote: "Uhh Ahh" received six scores of 8 or above, not quite enough to overcome the four of 3 or less.
Best bit: "I'm caressing your body emotionally," which sounds like something a nervous virgin would say.

Best bit: The song's subdued loveliness. It forgoes the melodrama of Boyz II Men's biggest breakup anthems for a more earnest emotional impact.
The lowdown: Boyz II Men rarely made guest appearances on other artists' songs, but this Michael Jackson-sampling collaboration gave LL Cool J the biggest Hot 100 hit of his career. Confusingly, it also netted him the 1997 Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance.
The vote: Though tied overall with "Water Runs Dry," "Hey Lover" jumps ahead one spot on the countdown because of Changes' 10.
Best bit: Imagining LL and Shawn Stockman are singing to each other.
