If a humanoid terrestrial population needed to adapt by becoming aquatic to prevent extinction, they would do so over the course of millions of years.

And no, they wouldn't necessarily need to be at the bottom of the ocean because A). they never fully escaped humanity and B). the idea is that they're sentient, intelligent creatures. They could have escaped humanity simply through their intellect and their ability to play hide-and-go-seek.

All aquatic animals we know about do not have limbs like we do. It is very safe to presume nothing has limbs like we do down there.

Actually lots of aquatic mammals have bone structure very similar to that of land mammals, feet bones, two femurs etc. So that argument is null.

It is an excellent point. There has to be some truth somewhere when cultures from all over the world have mermaid lore going back centuries, going back to times when they could not have shared their stories or ideas, when they had no contact. How does the same image, the same story pop up all over the world if there is absolutely no foundation behind it?
