Not really. I've said multiple times it didn't necessarily have to be an anthropoid.
I'ma say it for the 7th time (I've been counting, lol):
If a humanoid terrestrial population needed to adapt by becoming aquatic to prevent extinction, they would do so over the course of millions of years.
And no, they wouldn't necessarily need to be at the bottom of the ocean because A). they never fully escaped humanity and B). the idea is that they're sentient, intelligent creatures. They could have escaped humanity simply through their intellect and their ability to play hide-and-go-seek.
