Okay, I guess I'm going to have to break this down for you VERY simply.
If someone is racist or sexist, NO, I do NOT think that is okay. I do NOT believe that you should be any of those things or anything similar to it. But if someone is one of those things or anything else similar that is socially taboo BUT doesn't put it out there for everyone to know, then I don't think it concerns me and that I should have an opinion on me. But if someone DOES put it out there for everyone to know, THEN I find it wrong and I will hold it against them and see them in a negative light. That's speaking as if I didn't know them.
If someone was a friend of mine and I DIDN'T know that they were racist or sexist or something but had heard that they were from other people, then NO, of course I would NOT have an opinion on it and I would wait to know from THEM ONLY if they were or not. But if a friend of mine told me or made it obvious specifically to me that they were racist or sexist or something THEN I would have difficulty being their friend or being around them.
Hopefully this clarifies my point because I feel very misunderstood.

I understand what you are saying. I think you could use your own point to understand the backlash you got.
If you are racist and no one knows = fine
If you are racist and people know = bad
If you think secret racism is fine and you don't say it on ATRL = fine
If you think secret racism if fine and you say it on ATRL = you will get dragged
