LOL. It's just kind of at the point that when a movie debuts that big that they can double that amount and if they can't, then it's a sad story.
Like if the movie debuts with $120 million, then it should be able to make $240 million by the end of it's run and that's how I determine a failure or not or if they just debut with $1 million, then I consider it Gigli.

^It is shocking though that Simpsons debuted even better than 300, and seeing that there are no animated films coming out soon, it's total gross should be even bigger than 300's which had a very similar opening.

Well, you have to admit that 300 was great, but it's R - rated, so I'm sure parents don't want like their 10 year olds going to see it, while the Simpson's Movie, is more, family oriented than 300 is. In the end, the Simpson's Movie has a fan base and a true fan base, the fan base are the people who watched the Simpsons, but now don't, like me. Then you have the true fan base which consists of people who still watch the Simpsons and have for a long time. I think that in the end, the Simpsons also had help because it's the summer and everyone wants a good laugh, which is what the Simpson's Movie provides while 300 was a movie that gave you action which people also like and they had to compete with work and school, unlike movies from the summer.
It's also a little surprising that the Simpson's Movie beat Transformers in it's opening, but it looks like Transformers will surpass $300 million and it's beating Pirates of the Caribbean through it's same days and looks to beat Pirates in the U.S. total.

Well the Transformers opened on the Tuesday of its first week (technically Monday) and the amount it grossed during the week was so high because of the independence day break and all, and most people watched it during the week, rather the weekend. I think from Monday to Thurs it earned 87 million, so thats where Tranformer's opening was backfired. though Spidey 2 had an 88million weekend opening and it was released during the week because, like you said it already had a fanbase from the previous movie and comics.

Well, I think in the end, people weren't happy with the 1st one and I was so - so on the 1st one, so I think people in general just went to see it to get entertainment and that's it, but most people are probably waiting til' it comes out on dvd. Not to mention that our problem with movies isn't the opening weekend, it's the follow up weekends after it like when Pirates went from $114 to $42, ouch! I think that if movies could have longetivity like Titanic, then all the movies could do much better than they normally do, but the good news is:
We are ahead of any other year right now at the same point through every year to August 1st, so that's great news, but we have to be careful because 2004 is the best year of all time and it had some heavy hitters in November and December.

Yea and we have very few that might fare well in the winter! that sucks, this entire year, ive been happy that 2007 was in the lead, but it is neck-in-neck with 2004, and ofcourse in the winter we have things like National Treasure, meet The Fockers, Incredibles (?) and so on...
Movies don't longevity anymore, atleast this year, because the filmakers are pouring out films like candy or something, and people are confused as to what to watch, I mean most people cant afford to pay $6-10 for all these movies, and mostly people go in the 1st weeked because they dont wanna all the goodies to leak, which would mean that they cant watch it later on or on DVD. in the days of Titanic, the prices were MUCH cheaper (almost three dollars less in average) and there was less competition too.
This year, we had a major film dropping every week starting well actually almost every week we have a big movie coming out (if not one, multiple. Im mean there were weeks with 6 or 7 wide releases coming out!). If there was less competition, then some movies would actually reach Titatinc's felicity, maybe even surpass it. Anyhow, all we can do right now is watch as major blockbusters get released in consecutive weeks(its as if all these studios sat down talked about having a different blockbuster released every week, so they can try to be weven with the # of #1's ), and spawn hopless pursuits in attaining atleast 400 million.

True, I do think that the Simpson's Movie does have potential to break $150 million by Monday and I'll stick by that.
It's good to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix beating the others in the series at the same stages in their totals, but in the end, the Sorcerer's Stone has yet to be beaten in the U.S. & worldwide totals.

Yea i think The Simpsons might actually beat The DaVinci Code i the end, maybe even Cars?
Harry seriously needs to beat the first movie, as you said, Order of Phoenix is far ahead of several others but close to the fourth film, in the end it MIGHT reach 300 million

^^You say that this Winter should be mild in terms of Box Office, but The Golden Compass should fare extremely well. In fact, whilst I expect it won't reach Narnia's domination, I still think that with such a good cast, i should bring in 50 million in it's opening. Book of Secrets should do relatively well too.

I actually am going to say that it won't break $100 million only cuz the fact that it didn't impress me that much and it doesn't look that good, but nonetheless, we've seen surprises at the box office like Borat last year.
I will have to say that this winter will mainly fall into the hands of Oscar - related movies with Alien vs. Predator 2 & National Treasure 2 competing for top notch supremacy.

...huh? The first one didn't even make $100M domestic, and you expect it to compete for tops of the winter season?
Three movies are going to dominate in December, I think: The Golden Compass, I Am Legend and, obviously, NT2. The Golden Compass looks like another one of those movies that fantasy geeks out there will just love. And as for I Am Legend? Here's my two word rationale: Will Smith.

^i know, i guess they didnīt think of it as a success at first, but this lebouf dude seems to be the new **** (he was really good in transformers, he has a unique, clumsy and insecure touch to his acting)....and iīm a HUGE fan of hitchcockīs "rear window" so itīs gonna be interesting to see how it works!
