The American dream is to get rich & famous only to break down and up medicated and under heavy surveillance? People love Britney but she's probably not one of the most envied celebrities around. Her story is pretty tragic actually.
Britney is still popular because she built a strong and loyal fanbase during the days when she actually used to be the best female pop performer in the world. And because her personal life is fascinating. She's so fragile and that makes people want to watch her and root for her. She has America wrapped around her finger and that's why it doesn't matter that she can't sing or dance or do anything anymore.

She's only a little past 10 years into her career & the majority of her stans are only in their late teens to early twenties. 10 years into Janet's career she was just about to release "janet.;" 10 years into Madonna's she was ending the "Erotica" era and starting "Bedtime Stories" era; 10 years in Michael's he has just released "Thriller." In comparison, Britney has burned out faster, but artists of the past were able to space out the releases of their albums more and society wasn't as ADD as it is now so that has to be taken into account.
Britney's impact on pop culture's demo (teens to 20 year olds) still hasn't made it through pop's digestive system. The answer isn't as mystifying as some of you are making it. It would be more appropriate to ask this in 2020 if she's still as relevant then. But who knows, she might release a "Ray Of Light" between now & then. To me it seems like the stars are aligning for Brit to take the more artistic route anyway. She'll have her personal freedom soon, her sons, & prob a new husband. She'll no longer be shackled to her label's or father's greed and will be able to do whatever she pleases without having to worry about adding more years to her conservatorship. It's all up to her.

I'm here to back up my queen. Got a problem????
And to answer the question. She's relevant because she has everyone pressed and wishing her the worst since 2000. Queen is unstoppable.
Britney ****ing Spears.

britney is just a dorky pop star that makes dance music, the reason she is relevant is because people dont have to think when they listen her songs.

Britney did not fully dive into the "Urban trend" when following the wave of urban infused sounds. The "Britney" era was the first album she experimented with a few songs being of urban influence, the album was released in 2001. Hip Hop & R&B began to pickup in the US the same time or after she released the Britney album. 2002-2006 was as urban as the Billboard charts got. Once again, she was ahead of the curve.
When she released In The Zone, the sounds on that album was a mixture of Pop, reggae, urban, Adult Contemporary, and so on. She released an album full of different sounds in a time where Hip Hop and R&B dominated the radio and billboard charts. Toxic was one of the few genuine Pop songs to spark interest across formats and praised by several critics.
I don't think we have to mention how Blackout along with Loose and FS/LS kickstarted a new age in Pop. Rihanna was the first new artist to help those three resurrect Pop by releasing GGGB and then Gaga came with The Fame to further help the efforts.
Britney has never conformed to what's in at the moment until Femme Fatale. Circus was just a a generic album with few standouts on it that were reflective of pop albums from earlier in the decade.
I think "Rawr" pretty much summed up the question to this thread and they explained it in a less "attention seeking" way.

Ugh, thank you. I'm glad someone else is old enough to remember what's really up.

1- She has some of the best mainstream pop music out there.
2- She is fascinating & endearing. For a while, she was this picture-perfect popstar but now she's seen as a human being after everything she's been through.
3- She's probably the most hated & ridiculed popstar thus giving a reason to people to root for her and to her stans to defend her.
4- I think the general public (those who didn't stalk her performances) is more at ease now admitting they like her songs than before.
5- The way she owns pop songs.
People tend to critic her voice (which I repeat is not even her real voice, go listen to "Let Go" or "He About To Lose Me" for that) and I don't know how to explain it for the narrow minded snobs in here...
You have lyrics and you need to pull them off in a convincing way. So much that you're overshadowing, the more technical singer that sing the demo. So much that it's impossible to imagine anyone else singing your songs (even though you didn't write them).
So much that you can create a powerful alchemy between your voice and the intricate production...
The list goes on and on but these are some elements to explain pop singing at it's very best.
What she's been doing since 1999.
6- She, along with Michael & Madonna, defined a movement in pop music.
One of my friend, and he doesnt' like her by the way, told me "Musically, those who grew up in the late 90's and the greater part of the 00s are part of the Britney era." He's 100% right.

Thanks for this. I'll leave you alone now. By the lack of a relevant response to my statement, you proved its validity. Have a nice day.

I think he means the opposite. When she had the meltdown, she was relevant, but for the wrong reasons. She lost many fans and her album sales were extremely low at that time. Having another meltdown and doing the things she did would make her sales decrease by a lot.
