Lawyers arguing in favor of petitioners were presented a few days ago.
Quote:
SCOTUS requested that a single representative per question present before the court and the petitioners have recognized Mary L. Bonauto from the Boston based Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders. She will represent question one discussing if the 14th Amendment requires a state to issue same-sex marriage licenses, and Douglas Hallward-Driemeier, a partner in the Washington office of Ropes & Gray, will represent question two addressing states' recognition of same-sex marriages performed out of state.
Bonauto is the lawyer behind the historic Goodridge v. Department of Public Health case that legalized marriage for same-sex couples in Massachusetts over 10 years ago.
Solicitor General of USA, Donald B. Verrilli, Jr, will also argue before SCOTUS for 15 minutes defending same-sex couples.
The states defending their bans on same-sex marriage or recognition had announced last month that they will be represented by former Michigan Solicitor General John J. Bursch arguing the marriage question and an associate solicitor general for Tennessee, Joseph L. Whalen, on the recognition issue.
Also, amicus briefs against marriage equality have started to pour in. One of them equates homosexuality to incest and another argues that ex-gays are the minority in the USA subject to the most animus.
I wonder if the American Academy of Pediatrics will respond to the American College of Pediatricians.
Puerto Rico has asked the 1st Circuit to decide as soon as possible.
As for the other territories, some couples were too shy to apply for a license, but now that one has been denied in Guam the couple can sue and the 9th Circuit who already ruled for marriage will make the island change its law
Good news and bad news on the US territories: PR's hearing is on hold until after the Supreme Court's hearing but GUAM BEGAN HANDING OUT LICENSES TODAY First territory
Guam's Attorney General ordered the clerks to hand out licenses two weeks ago. The Governor said to wait and he'll give an order on what to do, but in the end he fled the island! He's been gone ever since because he didn't want to let couples marry He hasn't been back to Guam since
Senators are freaking out about the possible arrival of gay marriage so they've started introducing bills to exempt states from having to marry couples
Them freezing the case is actually the best thing that could happen. The judges they picked were the pits and the full appeals court is redder than the one Texas is a part of
We posted the same thing Which thread are you gonna bump in June?
Both, one with a decision and one with a THE END/Thank you. This one has the most views of any thread I had Check out the Ireland referendum thread (they're next )
Predicting the outcome of a case by the questions asked at a Supreme Court oral argument is always hazardous, but based on their past constitutional positions, there seem to be at least five justices — Kennedy plus the liberals — who are ready to recognize some version of a right to same-sex marriage.
Only going to bump this if something happens in Guam/Texas/Mississippi/Louisiana/Arkansas (state case) because those are the only ones left. Everyone else is waiting for the Supreme Court. For dishing on what happened at the Supreme Court, please see the other thread
I can't wait for the fumes when it gets legal in Mississippi My overly religious grandparents and aunts and uncles live there and they will be like "it's the coming of the devil lord help us"
