Not really, unless there are thousands and that is because posts don't take up that much space unless there are thousands of them. It's the traffic more than anything. The bigger the site gets, the slower it'll go.
I digress. ATRL is a forum, correct? It's all about talking and discussing the topic at hand. The only thing that should be "banned" are the random/pointless posts, like you said, and even random talk of other celebs.

The reason the server is so slow is because of the absurd amount of pointless posts.
