She better be. Oh, and I think figured out your album runner-up.
We'll see if you're right tomorrow but for now.....
Thanks to Buzzfeed, this song became and viral sensation and rightfully so. The video alone is so unique and creative and I'm a bit shocked it wasn't capitalised more on. The song itself is one of the rare tracks on _genic in which she actually sings in Japanese. This song also just makes me so happy.
I did say way back I'd be mentioning my fave song by her, and here it is. I just love the dark and somewhat ~edgy~ feel of this, I also love Styrke's cold delivery of the lyrics too. This song also marks the last female vocal on the English list surprisingly.
f(x) are without a doubt the best pop group in Asia, actually scratch that. They're the best pop group globally. All their releases are absolutely superb when it comes to quality and can easily compete in the Western market, and 4 Walls is absolutely no different. When I first heard the album was going to be solely electronic based I was very happy given that's my favourite genre, and this didn't disappoint. The deep house title track of 4 Walls, the very Shinichi Osawa Deja Vu, the atmospheric Traveler, the Nintendo like Glitter and the Carly Rae Jepsen penned 80s track When I'm Alone. This album is really something amazing.
After nearly 10 years without anything, Roisin comes back with probably her best album to date. Sometimes it can be very minimalist in places, whilst others it can be very loud, very quirky and very dramatic but this combination makes for a fantastic album. Some of the songs on this album, such as Evil Eyes, are very reminiscent to what Moloko would have put out in the early 2000s and her influences for this album too are also interesting to look at, such as Gone Fishing being inspired by Paris is Burning. The music videos for this albim are also quite theatrical, which completely works with the songs.
Normally, this duo typically perform pop/rock music but this electronica anthem is a complete 180 for them and they own it! I love the lyrics to the song and how her voice is vocoded to match the feel of the track, and the production on this is just superb. It's just such a fun song to listen to.
It only just occurred to me that top 2 for this list are both ~indie rock~ bands. The Vaccines debut album is incredible and it's a shame that their material dips with every release, but English Graffiti was surprisingly a return to form of sorts. This song reminds me a lot of A Lack of Understanding by them (which is my favourite song by them.), I don't really know what it is about this song but it kinda just....punches? Maybe it's the emotionless yet emotional vocal delivery with a somewhat stripped back instrumental.
I've heard about about moumoon, but didn't get a chance to try them. It sounds good.
Their discography is absolutely nothing like that song tbh.
Anyway, the number 1 songs of the year are........
I've already said how much I love 4 Walls as a whole but I never mentioned this song. I love 90s dance music AND my favourite ever group decide to go in that direction? I'm honestly in love. The lyrics are amazing and the instrumental is just phenomenal and it's such a fun song to listen to & is easily my most played song in 2015.
Foals are without a doubt my favourite western band and all of their albums get better & better after every release. () Give It All is easily the standout track from What Went Down, it's the perfect moody and sombre track and the some of the lyrics are just so relatable to me such as:
See you there, wanna see you some day
As you look back, I'm pulling away
You caught the bus and I caught the train
All that remains are words in the rain
Honestly this verse means so much to me because of how relevant it is to the person I'm crushing on hard lmao....but everything about this song is really perfect.
This isn't going to be a surprise to anyone who knows me well, y'all know how much I stan DOWN this album. It's very rare for me to love every single song from an album and this is one of those rare cases. Although it's a complete switch from past pop/rock material, it's surely love fantastic. The video is a cute little snippet video of every song as I couldn't choose what to pick as they're all brilliant.
As I said yesterday, Foals' material gets better & better with every release and What Went Down is no exception. Everything about this album is perfect from the instrumentals to Yannis' vocal delivery. I'll just let the music do the talking.
