I've known about this band for a year or so but never got round to listening to their discography until recently. I don't think their music is very easy listening but if you take the time to listen to their discography you won't be disappointed! Each of their albums are entirely different to each other whilst staying within the electronic genre. Their mix of quirky vocals, hard-hitting beats and dark lyrics reaches a peak on their third album "Silent Shout"; it certainly deserves all the critical acclaim it received! It surprises me that The Knife aren't brought up more often, they're one of the most innovative bands in their genre! I'm dying to hear their fourth album "Shaking The Habitual", which is out April 8th next year.
Very interesting band. While most of their songs have pop roots, they do venture into darker territory with a few of their tracks which caught my attention. Funnily enough, my favourite track from this band is their cover of "It's Not Over Yet". I'm anticipating their third album, supposedly due out next year.
While I'm not a big fan of their first two releases (I haven't really listened to them much), it was their third album that caught my attention and ears. They totally re-invented themselves. It may have been released 11 years after their second album but I'd say it was worth the wait! It's dark, heavy, harsh, haunting, creepy and beautiful all at the same time. I highly recommend it!
It was only when I discovered "Slide In" on iTunes (I'd been listening to it non-stop on a racing game for years) that I stumbled upon Goldfrapp. What an amazing duo! Alison and Will are always experimenting with new sounds and aren't afraid to alienate some of their fanbase. Their discography is quite diverse: ranging from the creepy film music of "Felt Mountain" to the folktronica of "Seventh Tree" to the glam-pop of "Supernature" to the straight-up 80s dance pop of "Head First". There's something for everyone!
Having heard "Wolf Like Me" previously and really enjoying it, I decided to check out TV On The Radio's discography. I must admit it took several listens for me to enjoy their albums! I guess they're an acquired taste. Tunde Adebimpe's all-over-the-place vocals plus Dave Sitek's excellent production (he's worked with the likes of Santigold and Yeah Yeah Yeahs) plus their unique genre-hopping sounds make for an interesting listen and it's hard to find a genre to put them in, let alone any bands that sound similar to them.
Discovered Garbage just before their fifth album "Not Your Kind Of People" was released. Shirley's sometimes angelic, sometimes menacing, unique voice, combined with the rocky electronica-tinged production are a great combination. I respect Garbage for not being afraid of creating pure pop songs. In fact, alot of their songs are quite poppy. Their most recent album aforementioned is a spectacular return to form, after 2005's back-to-basics "Bleed Like Me" album. Don't let their band name put you off!
I've had Heads Will Roll since 2010 but for some reason I never checked out their discography until earlier this year. I'm glad I did because it's short and sweet! They're one of those bands that improves with time, I think. Karen's voice is so unique, I love it. I'm so excited for their new album, it's out sometime in Spring!
Bat For Lashes technically isn't a new discovery as I already had 7 of her songs before this year... but let's skip over that part. I didn't listen to her full discography until September. I was surprised by how strong her albums are; you just never get bored! Her vocals and the intricate production take you to another place, creating amazing imagery in your mind. Natasha's a genius!
My top discovery this year. Where do I begin?! I can't quite decide what it is about this band that captivates me. Their songwriting, production skills, Kele's vocals, everything's just perfect! They're always changing their sound and looking for new ways to evolve. Perhaps that's what draws me to them; their albums are all entirely different to each other which makes for a very interesting and great listen.
Klaxons! YYYs! I love them so much
I lost track of Bloc Party after their first two albums, I need to get back into them. I always liked their style.
Garbage and Bat For Lashes but all of these are great artists.
Delphic & TV on the Radio both are amazing bands! and I discovered them last year thanks to last.fm
tbh I discovered Bloc Party this year too loved their album! need to listen to the old ones
