Theme#2: Pop Music
Popfusion Idol Theme Song!
NG: Let's not waste any time, first up for this pop music week we have Dnr928!
1 - Dnr928 - Say Anything (Else) (From Cartel - Say Anything (Else)) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: Dnr, well that's 2 minutes or so of my life I'll never get back. That was dreadful, I realize you're a bit younger but you were out of tune almost the entire song. I don't think singing is for you at all, but hey, you can always ask Mazen for his robotic voice.
2/10...
Kaos: Dnr, I felt like you didn't have a connection to the song. It sounded like you were falling asleep all the way through. Maybe next time you should record this before your bedtime. Tsk tsk tsk! But on the brighter side you are definitely the best 13 year old singer in this competition.
2/10...
Mikal: I'll be interested in hearing you sing in a couple years. Right now, though, the voice is just a tad too high with the song you picked and it sounds off.
5/10...
Kworb: Wow, to already have such a big voice at 13. You have such a bright future ahead of you. You know how they always say we should raise the age limit, well that's just nonsense, you are living proof of the maturity and artistry a 13 year old person can have. Bravo!
9/10...
NG: Let's get on our feet because now singing Toxic, here's our second contestant Mazen!
2 - London Bitch (Mazen) - Toxic (From Britney Spears - Toxic) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: Mazen, thought the robotic vocals were cute the first time around, but this time they're just annoying me. It'd be nice to hear the real you at least once in this competition. With that said, you are surely one of the most entertaining ones here.
6/10...
Kaos: Mazen, you know I'm a fan of you since day one right? Though I enjoyed your performance like always, I do think you need to work on the annunciation of the words. On some parts I could not understand what you were saying. Other than that you were awesome!
8/10...
Mikal: So this is what the robot maid from The Jetsons sounds like when she sings! I really wanna hear Mazen...ya know...sing. Without reverb and protools and such.
0/10...
Kworb: Another excellent song choice, Mazen. Though you could sing a book with no pictures in it to me, and I would still not be bored. I think you are going to sail through to the next round and the rounds after that, you are just in a different league.
9/10...
NG: Let's keep the pop music going, singing Breakaway, here's Angelo!
3 - Angelo - Breakaway (From Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: Angelo, that was much better than your performance last week. The vocals were improved but still not your best. You lost me during the chorus, seems like you were singing in the wrong key and some parts of the bridge just felt a little flat..but overall I'm impressed, especially coming from your mediocre performance of "Boyfriend."
8/10...
Kaos: Angelo, you've already proven yourself that you can sing upbeat but man this week proves that you are a well rounded performer. A definite contender for the finale. Very well done. I can see this being a hit.
8.5/10...
Mikal: Someone came to play, apparently. Excellent decision to go acoustic. The verse are clear and perfect. The chorus' are a tad rough. Otherwise, a contender.
8/10...
Kworb: Angelo, I am just stunned by that amazing performance. It's like it came out of nowhere!! You had such excellent control over your voice, yet the emotion was so clear and powerful. I think you took the original and reinvented it, you blew it out of the ballpark. It was brilliant, just briliant. I'm actually kinda teary-eyed because it was so good. The best we have seen so far this season.
10/10...
NG: Backstreet Boys fans should stay for this, singing now here's Lingos!
4- Lingos - All I Have To Give (From Backstreet Boys - All I Have To Give) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: Lingos, please do yourself and everyone else a favor and don't sing anymore. It seemed like you were having a stroke while recording this, and if you were, I wish you speedy recovery.
0/10...
Kaos: Lingos, you picked a really hard song to sing. This song is meant for a group but boy did you cover every part of this song effortlessly. You were high, you were low, you were flat, you were slow but most of all you gots the flow.
2/10...
Mikal: I'll let your evil evil vocal to stand on its own merits.
0/10...
Kworb: Once again you've presented yourself as the heartthrob of the competition and you've done so successfully. But the greatest thing about you is that vocally you are amazing as well, you're like a record company's dream. Another excellent performance, Lingos, keep it up.
9/10...
NG: Fifth contestant singing Robbie Williams' classic, Liyoh!
5 - Liyoh - Angels (From Robbie Williams - Angels) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: This performance was a mess to me. The verses were alright but you messed up really badly in the chorus'. Definitely an improvement over last week, but you still have a lot more improvement to do.
5/10...
Kaos: Liyoh, I think this was definitely a good song choice for you. The title fits you perfectly cause Liyoh your voice is like a Mexican Angel. Joo noo wat I meen? You fell flat in all the higher notes but it's nothing to worry about. Your wings will get bigger someday mijo!
5/10...
Mikal: Miles better than last week's performance. Still can't hit the big notes and there was some odd phrasing, but otherwise a commendable job.
6/10...
Kworb: Liyoh, another touching performance. What a beautiful ballad, I am just speechless that such a divine sound can come from just one man. For me, you are the frontrunning guy.
10/10...
NG: Next contestant might be able to make Britney Spears proud, here's Pedro!
6 - Pedro - (From Britney Spears - Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: You make Britney Spears seem like a vocal powerhouse with a voice to be reckoned with, although, maybe it's your goal to make Britney seem so much better by butchering her songs? Either way, horrible performance.
3/10...
Kaos: Pedro, you have such a wonderful gift. You painted that song very well. Like a rainbow in the sky, your voice was full of colors. Your performances are always filled with emotions like a gay kid needing some love.
2/10...
Mikal: Flat and rather rasal. Not all that good to listen to. I'd rather listen to Sanjaya bore his way through this song than hear your flatness again.
3/10...
Kworb: Wow, I've got goosebumps all over. The first verse was kind of lifeless, but then you just swelled into that powerful chorus, and it was so heartfelt and emotional. I think you were wise to show off your vocal prowess with such a classic ballad. I loved it!
9/10...
NG: Next up, singing With Love from the goddess Hilary Duff...Adrian!
7 - Adrian - With Love (From Hilary Duff - With Love) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: Adrian, a little better compared to last week's horrible "Candyman" performance, but still leaves a lot to be desired. The fact that you sang most of it through the nose makes it that much worse. Truthfully, if I wanted to hear nasal singing, I think I'd much prefer to hear Fran Drescher do this song.
4/10...
Kaos: Adrian, yo dawg! You said it all! You definitely did that song with a lot of lovin. That performance was the epitome of total attitude. You manage to make that song masculine even though it's a girl song. A lot of other singers tend to sound gay when they do such attempts but Adrian you killed it dawg! Bravo! It was straighter than Ru Paul.
3/10...
Mikal: At least you clearly sang this week, rather than lecture at us. However, either due to how quickly you spit the words out or whatever, you were still rather flat and it did sound like it came through the nose.
4/10...
Kworb: Another spectacular and fun performance from the pro! You got everyone dancing, you exuded so much energy. I think your music, your sound, is like the best kind of drug, and I just want to be high on it forever.
9/10...
NG: Any Maroon 5 fans? Let's see if this contestant can nailed their song. Here's Spencer!
8 - Movie Maestro (Spencer) - This Love (From Maroon 5 - This Love) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: Spencer, I feel this is a step back from last week. Last week, you were shouty this week I just found it to be extremely boring. I barely made it through the performance without falling asleep. Work on the timing of the songs too, some of it came out too rushed.
6/10...
Kaos: Spencer, that was brave of you to take on a modern classic. You definitely made the song your own. All those runs are out of this world dawg! I feel like youre the missing member of Gnarls Barkley. Keep it up man, youre doing great!
5/10...
Mikal: I think I liked this one overall more than last week and the vocal was rather good. But I'd watch the phrasing, since you sound like you are rushing through the song.
8/10...
Kworb: Such an improvement from last week!! I almost didn't recognize you. It was a fun, sexy performance, you were in tune the entire time, the climax was beautiful, you really captivated me, and the rest of the audience. Very impressive, keep it up!!
10/10...
NG: Our next contestant will have to prove that he belongs in this competition...Here's Kevin!
9 - Kevin - What's Left of Me (From Nick Lachey - What's Left of Me) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: Kevin, I'm sure wherever Nick Lachey is right now, he's twitching with discomfort. You just completely destroyed his song, and not in a good way. The only thing I have to say is, you know how when the bell rings, an angel gets its wings? Well, whenever you let out a "note" that angel loses its wings once again and a poor helpless puppy is killed, think of the puppies and angels next time you open your mouth.
0/10...
Kaos: Kevin mah man! Another solid performance. Though I feel like you were kinda losing it in the second half of the song. You sounded like your mouth was getting too dry. Next time, try to lube your mouth out before each performance so you don't eat all your words. Other than that you did wonderful.
1/10...
Kworb: Kevin, you look great tonight, and I think the band was really good. I also really like flowers and I love going to the zoo.
7/10...
Mikal: It's still horrible, although there are others that are just as horrible this week could spare you from a needed and deserved elimination.
0/10...
(NG walks up to Kevin on the stage)
NG: (whisper to Kevin) It's alright..
Mikal: Kevin, didn't I tell you to stop singing?
NG: Mikal, Mikal, Mikal, please don't be rude to the contestant.
(Mikal rolls eyes)
NG: Eventhough it was not his best performance, you never ever disrespect a contestant like that.
Mikal: Um, NG I was just telling it like it is. Let's face it, this is a singing competition.
Kworb: Mikal, seriously just calm down? WILL YA! Kevin, you know you are a phenomenal singer, and honey you look GREAT!
NG: No. Mikal, you never liked Kevin since last week's show, so was it the song choice he picked or you just don't like Kevin?
Mikal: Excuse me. Who. rattles. your. cage? Sigh. I need to take a break from this. I have to go guys.
Kworb, Zephyr & Kaos: Oh c'mon, Mikal.. Dawg! come back.
(Mikal leaves the Popfusion Idol's Hall)
NG: Well..sorry for that technical difficulties..! Anyway the show must go on. We'll get his opinions later on the last three contestants when he returned to the show! without being bitchy...
How about more live music? Singing next here's GoldenBoy!
10 - GoldenBoy (Justin) - Gotta Get Thru This (From Daniel Bedingfield - Gotta Get Thru This) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: Justin, I think your voice is extremely good but this performance left much to be desired. To me, it was all kinds of dull and I think it belonged in a lounge more than it did in a competition of this magnitude.
8/10...
Kaos: Justin we know you are one of the better singers in this competition but I feel a disconnection with most of the performance. The bridge and chorus was awesome but you need to be consistent and not bore everyone with the rest of it. You can't just sell the ice cream without the cone, you gotta have the whole package!
8.8/10...
Mikal: In pitch, not to shabbiliy done. I like you did the ballad version of it. However, you were shouty in spots where you probably should have just sang it.
9/10...
Kworb: That was amazing once again. Technically flawless, excellent song choice. The whole thing was very sexy and it reminded me of the slash fic I read about you on VoteForTheWorst. Way to go, Justin!
10/10...
NG: Eleventh contestant singing Kelly Clarkson's hits Behind These Hazel Eyes, here's X-Dre!
11 - X-Dre - Behind These Hazel Eyes (From Kelly Clarkson - Behind These Hazel Eyes) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: X-Dre, this is quite a step back from last week. I don't know what happened, I thought that you were one of the better voices of this competiton, I guess I was mistaken. Maybe it just wasn't the right song choice for you or maybe last week was a fluke, I guess we'll find out next week, that is if you make it of course 5/10...
Kaos: X-Dre, I thought you were voted off last week? Well thank god I was wrong cause you delivered another flawless performance. I was just wondering, did we have auditions in Mexico? Cause I feel like this season is filled with a lot of burritos and enchiladas. No? Well with that said I have a feeling a sombrero lover is gonna win this year.
2/10...
Mikal: Rather rough throughout the song, not much consistency staying in melody. Stetched to hit some notes. Really pick a song with a simpler melody next time.
3/10...
Kworb: X-Dre, that's very brave of you to tackle a song of a former idol winner. I love how you recognized that the original is oversung and annoying. Your vocals were perfect for it, I loved it. You just keep growing in this competition, and I am so eager to see what else you have in store for us.
9/10...
NG: Closing the pop music week, here's our last contestant Nick!
12 - Nick - Smooth (From Santana Feat. Rob Thomas - Smooth) <--download and listen here.
Zephyr: Nick, that was alright. I personally liked your performance of "Wasted" a bit better, but this was good. You should try to give the song a bit more personality though, it seemed to me that all you did was make a carbon copy of Rob's version. Either way, I see you going far.
8/10...
Kaos: Nick, you have such a rare talent. A lot of people sound bad when they're sick but you mah man is the complete opposite. You sounded the best! You made the others look like just good amateurs. You were like a returning diva!
9/10...
Mikal: Fantastic choice compared to last week. Much better tone and stayed in key without streching to reach the big notes.
9/10...
Kworb: Nick, that was way better than what we heard from you last week. It's so important that you keep improving each week, and you did exactly that. I would definitely donate my entire appearance fee for being on this show, just to see you in concert.
10/10...
