I didn't know Chromeo released something new this year.
I'll try to make a prediction.
Two artists that appeared in the last set will appear in this set. Name them. (I'm looking SPECIFICALLY for the artists here, not the songs...but getting the songs may also get you bonus credit.)
The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather
Zedd featuring Foxes - Clarity
Not one, but two singles from a returning rock giant and legend appear.
Korn - Never Never
Korn - Spike In My Veins
Another artist that appeared in this most recent set appears again in the upcoming set...but not as the featured artist.
The Strokes - All The Time
One of my all-time favorite bands makes their first of three appearances with a song that was just released as a single.
Queens Of The Stone Age - The Vampyre Of Time And Memory
Another long-time (as in I've loved them for over a decade) Red favorite makes a surprising collaboration with a dubstep/electro producer with surprising success.
Linkin Park featuring Steve Aoki - A Light That Never Comes

Counting Stars is pretty good. Although my favorite 1R single will probably always be All the Right Moves.
I think I either don't know or don't like everything else from this set Hopefully SIY will be higher it's far better than those other two singles Hayley participated in this year.

Instant Crush and Unbelievers! Great to know they still have possibilities to chart higher next year
I think "Over Your Shoulder" is one of their weakest singles.

Oh, believe me, I DO have a crush on Hayley. But generally, when I'm referring to Red Crushes in the YECA, I'm referring to Lights and Ellie Goulding. And soon to be Foxes.

The YECA: Top 100 Singles (80-71, Part One: The Singles)
80-71, WELCOME TO...being posted in this thread.
| David Bowie
The Next Day
Being the first song on an album is quite the difficult task. It's the song that sets up everything you're about to hear, the song that prepares you for what you're about to experience, and many albums have failed in part because the opening track was inadequate. David Bowie is a master of the first track. Look at his first tracks on albums over the years: "Space Oddity", "Changes", "Five Years", "Young Americans", "Fantastic Voyage"...the guy just knows how to get you pumped for an album, and "The Next Day" is no different. It's David Bowie, but only just, thanks to his distinct vocals. The best way I can describe this song is that it is just LOUD. It is so loud and alive that it barely feels like a Bowie song because of that...but Bowie makes sure that the song is his own by the end. |
| Soundgarden
By Crooked Steps
Oh, King Animal...I was so happy to hear you. I was so hyped to listen to the album for the first time, being someone who has been anticipating a new Soundgarden record for many years. It's safe to say that I was not disappointed. It's a Soundgarden album through and through, right down to the booming riffs and drums, along with Chris Cornell's (slightly weakened thanks to age) vocals. "By Crooked Steps" is SOUNDGARDEN at its very core. Listening to it for the first time was one of the most pleasant experiences of last year for yours truly, and it has lost none of its potency in the year that followed. |
| Sevendust
Picture Perfect
Remember how I said that "Decay" would have been Sevendust's best song in a decade had it not been for another song? Well, "Picture Perfect" is that song. I love "Decay", and it definitely has a spark to it that other hard rock bands do not have, but "Picture Perfect" is, like the previous song with Soundgarden, Sevendust at its core. They make music that sears into your soul, which they accomplish thanks, in no small part, to Lajon Washington's gorgeous vocals and the raw power of the instruments. The chorus on this song is, simply put, astounding. It's one of my favorite choruses of the entire year, and it's mostly because Sevendust's best quality is the ability to create a chorus worth remembering. |
| Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding
I Need Your Love
Calvin Harris and I have a somewhat interesting history. I really enjoy his solo efforts, particularly "Feel So Close", but there are plenty of times where I listen to songs of his and just feel cold. I'm not sure if that's the fault of Calvin Harris or my own fault, but there are just times when his songs do not work for me. "I Need Your Love" is not that kind of song. The beat here is alive, flowing and ebbing in a completely natural and smooth way, while Ellie Goulding flies into the picture with frantic and fast vocals to compliment the sound backing her. It's really no wonder that this song was a hit. It was born to be one the moment that the recording for this song ended. |
| The Neighbourhood
Sweater Weather
I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that "Sweater Weather" REALLY wore out its welcome over the course of 2013 for me. At one point, this song was competing for top 20 placement...and then, the last couple of months happened. And no, this does not have anything to do with the song's incredible crossover success. I don't listen to the radio, so the only overplay from me that can occur is self-overplay. As the year came to a close, I just started to grow tired of "Sweater Weather". It has a very distinct sound, but it's also the kind of sound that can really annoy me over time. I'm even beginning to wonder if this would be one of my 100 favorite singles from this year at the end of 2014. |
| Silversun Pickups
Dots and Dashes (Enough Already)
On the other hand, you have "Dots and Dashes", a criminally underrated single release from a YECA staple in Silversun Pickups. While "Bloody Mary" and "The Pit" were Alt radio successes for Silversun Pickups, this song...well, it wasn't very successful. For a while, it wasn't really successful with me, either. It didn't really stand out like the first two single releases did. It took a couple of months for me to truly get into the song, but man, once I did, I wondered why it took so long. It has EVERY quality of a great Silversun Pickups tune: A driving, up-tempo beat, a smooth bass riff, and one hell of a chorus. It's mind-blowing that this did not do better on Alt radio. It had "Hit" written all over it. |
| Linkin Park X Steve Aoki
A Light That Never Comes
This came out of NOWHERE for me. I was very impressed by Linkin Park's last album, Living Things. It felt like a breath of fresh air compared to Linkin Park's two previous albums, feeling like the band was more alive than they had been since Meteora. Suddenly, it was announced that Linkin Park would be doing another remix album for the album, this one entitled Recharge. Within, there would be one new track, a collaboration with dubstep and electro producer Steve Aoki. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but what I go was yet another song that felt alive and felt pulsating, just as Living Things did. I'm not sure if I want an entire album full of this particular sound, but it definitely has a place within Linkin Park. |
| David Bowie
Valentine's Day
So I'm listening to The Next Day for the first time, and I'm really enjoying the album. It has a lot of cool moments and Bowie being Bowie to the best of his abilities at an age when most musicians are either dead or clinging on to past glories. "Valentine's Day" then comes on, and a wave of nostalgia blows over me immediately. If there is a quintessential David Bowie "sound", "Valentine's Day" is basically the song version of that sound. It feels like Bowie pulled a song from 70's-era Bowie and gave the song modernized production and a new sensibility that can only come from a 66 year old version of David Bowie. This stood out as an immediate highlight of The Next Day on first listen, and that has not changed whatsoever since then. |
| The Wonder Years
Passing Through A Screen Door
Oh man, THIS song. I had heard a lot from pop punk fans about The Wonder Years over the years, and I didn't really pay those fans much attention. I've kind of outgrown that "pop punk" mindset as I've gotten older, so I didn't want to be disappointed by yet another pop punk band that sounded like every other pop punk band of the new generation. The Greatest Generation, though, was getting such rave reviews that I had to, at the very least, check out the first single, "Passing Through A Screen Door". And my god, I'm so glad I did. It's an amazing piece of pop punk, searing and soaring its way through its 3:35 runtime like it's nothing. That 3:35 felt like a minute, if that, and that's a really good thing for a pop punk song. This is yet another reason why I should never judge a book by its cover. |
| Korn
Spike In My Veins
Make no mistake, this song is not low because it's an inferior Korn song. This song is low (by Korn standards) because it was JUST announced as a single weeks ago. It's going to be much higher in 2014, that's for sure. But anyway, "Spike In My Veins". I loved this song on first listen. It stands out because of some of the best instrumentalization on the album. Jonathan Davis provides vocals that fit the song but are not all that spectacular on their own. With the instruments, though, it reaches another level, rising above itself. This is one of the best examples of what Brian "Head" Welch's return to the band actually did for the band. It wasn't just that he came back. It's that he came in and gave the band a reinvigorated sense of purpose. |

Okay, we're done with 80-71, which means that 70-61 is next...and will probably be up after New Year's Day. Coming up next: The Red Hint Giveaway continues!

Noted. Oh, and for the record, Korn just appeared in the last set, so there's no way the last one could be them.
