The pop diva brings her lavish "artRave: The ARTPOP Ball Tour" to Madison Square Garden

“You can be whoever you want tonight,” Lady Gaga told her "Little Monsters" minutes into her show at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night. Judging from the wildly risqué outfits of many -- both male and female -- what they really wanted was to be her.
The propulsive evening featured the lavish arena spectacle for which she’s become famous and a dazzling array of wigs and costumes that could one day well wind up in in a Metropolitan Museum of Art fashion exhibit.
Performing with a crunching five-piece band and a dozen constantly gyrating dancers, Gaga unveiled powerful vocals throughout, most notably in a stirring encore rendition of “Gypsy” and a slowed-down, ballad version of the hit “Born This Way.”
Such new songs as “G.U.Y.,” “MANiCURE,” “Sexxx Dreams” and “Swine” were delivered in galvanizing form that surpassed the recorded versions, while past hits like “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “Bad Romance,” “Alejandro” and “Paparazzi” made the expected impressions. Rapper T.I. briefly showed up to reprise his contribution to the new song “Jewels N’ Drugs,” although the appearance felt pro forma.
Unlike Madonna, who engages in similar, but decidedly chillier, over-the-top theatrics, Gaga invests her spectacles with an undeniable sweetness and heart. At one point, shorn onstage of her wig and most of her clothes, she seemed positively vulnerable, an endearing reminder of the little girl underneath all the outrageous pop diva trappings.

VIVA LA GAGA: IN DEFENSE OF THE ARTPOP BALL AND LADY GAGA'S POP REIGN
"Good Gaga" doesn't necessarily mean "Old Gaga," and The ARTPOP Ball proves it—even if it's a tricky fact to face
Quote:
When Lady Gaga dove headfirst into the neon-smeared, glitter-spewing spectacle of her ARTPOP Ball at Madison Square Garden last night, it was, on the surface, a typical Gaga affair. She rocked a keytar at one point. She took to the piano for a solo or two. She cooed at her Little Monsters and invited a few rocking "Applause"-inspired face paint backstage.
Her voice was flawless—a trained, broad belt that demonstrated she'd never need to lip sync. And she danced. She went through a handful of costume changes that involved latex suits and multiple wigs. And at the end of every song, she panted a tired, rhythmic gasp for air to let us know that she was, in fact, the real deal.
That pant wasn't subtle in the least. Her mic was left on because, despite ARTPOP's poor reception, her puke-soaked SXSW set and an avalanche of negative press recalling her former glory, Gaga is still on top of her game. And Gaga's game tops her peers on the pop charts based on sheer talent alone, no matter how many stunts and off-the-mark albums she builds up and stumbles upon in her own path.
It's easy to write off a Lady Gaga defense as making excuses for a great musician whose recent work doesn't live up to their own expectations. It's easier to accept ARTPOP as a final flub instead of Gaga's current incarnation. Despite the changing wardrobes, the stylistic detours and collaborations, Lady Gaga's songwriting, vocal chops and voice are still there. Like the phoenix in the "G.U.Y." video, she's set to rise again—even if the ashes she's crawling out of came from a match she lit herself in the name of ARTPOP.

May 14th, 2014. YASS! Last night Mother Monster brought her artRAVE: The Artpop Tour to New York City, and you guys, she totally killed it. For anyone who may have been wondering how the Haus of Gaga could turn Madison Square Garden—a giant, seated venue—into an intimate rave, V compiled a little step-by-step analysis of how our reigning queen of pop made the impossible possible:
1. ALL RAINBOW EVERYTHING. With a translucent stage that reflected light, the venue became a luminescent display of every possible hue a little monster could hope for—not to mention Gaga’s costumes, which included sequins of every shade, and all-neon raverwear, complete with painted dreads for the final number.
2. THAT STAGE! The biggest obstacle for an artist at such a large venue is how to reach the fans in the back—but with a stage that branched out and cut through mosh pits to reach just about every edge of the stadium, there wasn’t a bad seat in the house.
3. A PLANET CALLED VENUS. With blow up trees that shot out of the stage in an underwater-like confetti storm and back-up dancers dressed as aliens, wearing inflatables strapped to their limbs, our leader certainly took us there.
4. MIND-BLOWING, TRIP-WORTHY VISUALS. From swinging 40 feet in the air in fur to walking on stilt-sized stilettos in straight jackets, just about every song in the show had its own background video that lit up the stadium.
5. SPECIAL GUEST T.I. Need we say more? The famed rapper came running out onstage to sing "Jewels N’ Drugs," and the crowd went wild.
6. THE THROWBACKS. Though mother monster played every song from ARTPOP, she also included a few of her greatest hits—including “Bad Romance,” “Alejandro,” “Telephone,” “Poker Face,” “Just Dance,” and “Paparazzi.”
7. THE MONSTERS. Gaga read aloud several letters thrown onto the stage by her adoring fans, and magically, their writers were projected onto a big screen. "Come backstage after the show," she purred, and through tears of joy, the Little Monsters nodded YES.
8. “I LOVE NEW YORK LIFE,” sang Gaga in her encore, an altered rendition of “Gypsy” that brought the show home and reminded her fans that no matter where she goes, she’ll always be in New York City.

I guess the guy who wrote the "review" for Rolling Stone didn't get the memo, you DON'T bash Lady G's performances without looking like an uneducated prick.
Lady Gaga was NEVER going to get bad press for her performances, you can argue that her music is "not cool" or " too gay" but you cannot argue that her work ON STAGE is anything short of AMAZING.

One of the best sentences I've ever read regarding Gaga.

Wow there are some shockers of a review for NYC.
I think it makes sense when they point out it's not a 'rave' and ponder if Germanotta has ever been to one. Also, finding a lack of actual 'art' as well is an understandable negative element brought up by reviewers expecting she would deliver as promised - an "artRAVE".

Well then why put "art" in the title if you know you're not going to be doing any or having any?
