People may not like Madonna, but they'll begrudgingly admit that she is one of the biggest popstars ever and laid the groundwork for all these new girls. Just like people will say Janet couldn't sing, but she put on one hell of a show and slayed at various points in time. Legends remain legends, no matter what trials and tribulations they face in their personal life or how badly they mature. MJ was the personification of that.
