It's pop, but it's not the same mainstream pop that made her famous, is my point.
Artists grow and change over time, same with what's mainstream and not.
You can't define "mainstream pop" when there really isn't an undimmed root as to what mainstream pop is.

I think you absolutely can define what mainstream pop is. The definition is fluid because what's popular changes as time goes on, but as of right now, there's definitely a distinct type of electro-pop that's dominating. And this album is not that kind of pop.
The thing about BTW is that it's not totally mainstream pop but it's not really a throwback album or a rock album either. It exists in this strange limbo, so diehard fans of those genres are not going to be entirely satisfied with it. That's why I understand, say, Nicole's POV, even though I don't really agree with it.
This album has the potential to be a massive success if handled correctly. There's so much variation that the album itself can be broken down into individual eras.

Interscop has been very strategic so far so I'm expecting them to follow this formula not only for maximum longevity but also to slowly acclimate radio towards the techno sound that is far removed from the current dance pop trend. I think they'll release at least two songs from the above sections before proceeding to the next, which is why i'm convinced Hair will follow TEOG.
Is it safe to say that Gaga has created her own genre with this album? We all agree that it is not pop or rock, and the title of alternative just does not suffice.

I also think this too. Bloody Mary is giving me Thriller teas.

Are you high on some kind of unknown african auditory hallucinogen? this album is not electro-pop? WHAT THE ****?
Not that anybody cares, but I'm 100% pleased with the album. This was put out to divide people/make fans turn away/question Gaga and what she's about. It's supposed to be everything that a POP ALBUM should NOT be, which is why I love her so much. Of course she's going to do things that people (even fans) don't agree with but almost always, there is opposition when things evolve. Gaga's going into a different direction, and this album shows that she is breaking all the rules of a pop album. The only reason Born This Way (album) will ever be defined as pop will be for its popularity...not for its "pop sound." I realize how little this means coming from a new member but I thought I'd throw it out there however immature/pathetic it may seem. Love.
My God. I was so confused. I was like 'why is everybody quoting me I never said this!!!' But I wish I had. Great post! Not a bit I disagree with. I am loving Gaga's direction because it has got to be one of the most sincere pop albums to have been released in quite a bit (from someone as big as she).

Even songs that sound pop, have elements of rock-like vocals.
I don't know how to explain in writing, but every track as an element of a few genres smashed into one.
I've never heard **** like this in my life
